RIP Flaco Jiménez, the first king of Norteño music. In this clip from Les Blank's 1975 film about Norteño music, Chulas Fronteras, he performs one of his earliest hits, Un Mojado Sin Licencia (literally, a wetback without a license), a song uncomfortably relevant in this age of mass deportations.

I bought a little packet of gold stars and I stick one on my phone every time someone spells something wrong in the gc and I don't passive-aggressively correct them.

Today I let my kid who is not a kid but is in any case home for a month pick a place for lunch. The weather was nice but she picked a noodles place in Chinatown (#6 on the menu: Cattle entrails) and let me tell you: with a quart of hot noodle soup in ya belly you'll feel unpleasantly warm.

Yesterday we got off the elevator in our building and a pretty young 20-something (never seen her before in my life except in my dreams?) smiled at me very enthusiastically. Wife: "Was that for you? Did you see this Coldplay video?"

One of the most crucial upgrades I think Fairmount Park should make is installing a safe / legal way to cross Kelly Drive by the Girard bridge.
Decades ago there there was a pedestrian bridge here and to this day people routinely risk their life crossing.

My dad’s mother was a great seamstress, and made clothes for extended family, including things like maternity bathing suits. She was also a terrible procrastinator, and one time did alterations to the bride’s dress in the car on the way to the wedding.
