These four new tracks are from the album Brian Patten and I were working on over the winter of 2024–25. Sadly, Brian finally succumbed to his long illness at the end of September, making this a bittersweet listen.

RIP Brian

The Spotify link to my new single. Please share if you enjoy it. I'm hoping to earn enough royalties this month for a packet of guitar strings.

Sally Mackey — dear friend and colleague for 30+ years. A driving force in Drama Ed and Applied Theatre and one of the architects of Central as a modern HE drama school that trains practitioners, educators and thinkers under one roof. I’ll miss the long calls, the wine, the cookery tips. RIP.

@jonathancoe.bsky.social Truss; death of her maj. Shady thinktanks, grudge / guilt harbouring university chums and poisonous academics in a ‘cosy’ murder mystery. Plus a cameo from the briefly successful author of ‘Quite the Mash-Up’. Fab. Suggestion: Coe bingo cards would only enhance the delight

Dozens of universities, including the UT system and MIT, have announced programs to provide free tuition for undergraduate students from families who fall below a certain income threshold. Here are some of the schools and how these programs work.

Gear nerd post. Indulge me. Richard Hawley tonight with his 1959 Watkins Scout ( right) and later WEM Dominator (left). My Mersey Super 15 is the Scout in a different casing commissioned by Hessys music shop in Liverpool during Beatlemania in 1963. It didn’t take off and they reputedly only made 18.

Whitehall ‘comfortable in the tepid bath of managed decline.’ Nice line. Same might be said of the administrations of other sectors in the past ten years.

Just finished The Listeners on iPlayer. Remarkable. Clever nods to 70s art house movies. Rebecca Hall is outstanding. For those interested auditory hallucination, the use of sound in meditation and relaxation practices, and the often cultish association between aurality and expanded consciousness.

Just read the following in @msrachelcooke.bsky.social ‘s @newstatesman.com review of the Band Aid doc, which I haven’t seen, and I literally don’t know which one is which: ‘Simon Le Bon sits next to Bono, and it’s like the sixth form, the uncool kid laughing far too hard at the cooler kid’s jokes.’😂

Excited to be working with Brian Patten again, 25 years after our last collaboration. He was a hero of mine as a young man, and it’s a privilege to wake up to poems from him in my inbox, knowing I’m the first person to read them. Hoping to release some of the fruits of our endeavour by Easter.

The root causes of systemic problems are often technical and their solutions quite boring.

Rip it up and start again
Too centralised, too short term, too obsessed with Twitter, our political system is a dysfunctional mess. If we don’t fix it, we’ll all suffer
