largely kicked the cable news habit but couldn't resist a little hit of breaking in realtime. don't worry, i got my comeuppance when the host told a guest "now you have weeks of content for your podcast!"

back to college basketball, (barely) more morally palatable than the corporate news industry

can't stop thinking about this part in the scorcese doc where paul schrader says of taxi driver, "when i first wrote about him [travis bickle], he was the underground man. now he's the internet man." instead of talking to nobody, all the contemporary travis bickles are gassing each other up online

yes, agree. most things that have tried (and failed) don't capture that lynchian/postmodern, wholesale rejection of the metanarrative
The Chair Company *is* probably the closest anyone’s come to doing actual Lynchian art

right? when TLC said "no scrubs" everybody knew immediately what they meant. and yet "no kings" is unclear?

(and also somebody write that parody please... 🎶a king is a guy who thinks he's fly/also known as a fascist🎶)
I've seen multiple posts recently saying No Kings had no demands and I think I see what they mean but that also feels... not quite right to me

For one there's a demand in the name lol "no kings," like everyone was demanding an end to authoritarianism

after the hunt clearly endeavors to make the audience uncomfortable; viewing it as a professor adds a unique layer of discomfort. julia roberts is so damn good, and DP malik sayeed's incredible work is the most boundary-pushing thing about the whole film
Luca Guadagnino’s new film, “After the Hunt,” is “a posh Ivy League whodunnit and a cinematic Rorschach blot, cleverly rigged to generate cascading waves of suspicion,” @justincchang.bsky.social reviews.
“After the Hunt” Is a Pleasurably Ludicrous House of Cards
In Luca Guadagnino’s film, Julia Roberts plays a Yale professor forced to choose sides when a student accuses a colleague of sexual assault.

hard not to see ryder cup fans as a timely US metaphor— rich white dudes, emboldened by richer white dudes in power, making a spectacle of bad behavior. pro golf, like any global franchise, is impure all around but still easier to root for team EUR and rory to tell those douches to shut the fuck up

PTA's one battle after another has big "my partner is a Black woman" energy... multiple interpretations. sex + sexuality purposefully unsettle the audience, and harris describes some of the nuance here. ultimately agree that he makes a damn good (long, worth it) movie
