I really did manage some pretty amazing stuff in 2025
I still can’t believe Sequential Scotland happened

But shit it’s also been a rough one with my health. Getting sessions with an occupational therapist was so helpful, but also made me confront how much I was struggling with the fatigue

The same system in which Stan Sakai and Peter David had to turn to crowdfunding to pay for their medical costs later in life. The same system where writers and artists frequently see characters they have created splashed out larger than life on billboards while they struggle to make ends meet.

I decided, as someone who occasionally gets asked to comment on the state of the UK Comics industry, to read the Comic Book UK White Paper. I encourage everyone who works in comics to read the proposals themselves, and form their own opinions.

I was so excited when I saw that CBUK had formed, and was looking forward to seeing what work they were going to be doing.

I know I was very critical yesterday, but I also would really love for them to become an indispensable ally to the UK comics scene.
So I sincerely hope there will be a period of listening and reflection to some of this feedback, and that if CBUK are genuine about representing the comics publishing industry, a white paper v2 would be a good idea to prove that.

In this paper, to put it bluntly, cartoonists are just broodmares for IP.

I've had a good read of this now, and although it’s clearly not aimed at us I do have some thoughts on it. Buckle up, lads!

Yep.

I know there are exceptions, but just about every comic adaptation of a prose novel I've tried to read made my eyes glide right off the page.
Now to getting kids reading.

This made me laugh. Like actually.

I am 35 in a month, and I can remember being bought manga Hamlet and never reading it. This has been happening for a long time already. This is not the way to get kids reading classic literature.

For every @ryannorth.ca doing SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE with Albert Monteys, you're going to get a dozen Zenescope level hackjobs from people getting paid less than $10 a page to write and $60 a page to draw.

I can just hear the publishers: "You just have to adapt what's already there!"

I’m not against adaptation per se

I have this version of At The Mountains of Madness and I LOVE it.

But the impetus behind the adaptation needs to be excitement, passion and a vision for how you would create it

Ooooof.

This reads to me as a top down report from people looking to the avarice in our sister industries like video games and instead of wanting to protect against it thinking ‘how can we get in on that?’

Don’t worry, I will elaborate

Currently reading this. I think everyone in the UK who has any involvement with comics - be that making them, publishing them, selling them, loaning them, using them in classrooms - should probably read it. Will post thoughts later.
