Tech looks great on paper, but real security shows up in the field. Watching security staff and systems in action is where you spot the gaps no report ever flags. Sensors too high, patrols off-route, alerts ignored. Security works when humans and tech actually sync.

Always being “on” doesn’t make you a better leader. It weakens you. I've found that setting real boundaries gives me space to think and helps my team make decisions. Leadership isn’t being everywhere at once. It’s being intentional when you show up.
Being Always Available Is Quietly Destroying Your Leadership
Constant availability looks like empathy—but it drains focus, weakens authority, and erodes clarity. Discover why great leaders set boundaries to stay effective.

Tech won’t cover for weak fundamentals. Legacy systems, sloppy access controls, and unclear procedures leave sites exposed. Security works when you get the basics right and combine them with smart innovation.

Global Physical Security standards are long overdue for commercial buildings, data centers and the critical infrastructure that run them. Very thankful for groups like the Secure Building Council and IDCA that are working hard to improve this every day.

Sometimes I wish the security industry came with “basic instructions” like a toaster.

With no shared standards, everyone builds “safety” their own way… and little gaps become big problems.

Common sense is good, but a clear baseline keeps teams aligned and prevents issues before they hit.

Leadership isn’t about titles. It’s about showing up, mentoring, making decisions under pressure, and recognizing the people who make it all work. The best leaders I know lead with humility and experience.

Many orgs are using AI for threat monitoring... but security worries are holding the rest back. I’ve seen that in physical security too. Scale tech, yes. But if your people, process and physical layers aren’t ready, you’re just escalating risk.

Scaling digital fast is great, but if your physical security is stuck in the past, you’ve got a problem. Tech stacks can be sky-high, but if the foundation, access control, audits, site governance, is weak, you’re carrying risk you didn’t plan for.
Securing at scale: Why physical security must match digital ambition
For CIOs and boards, security has become one of the most critical pressure points in the AI era. Everyone is racing to build and deploy at speed and scale, but risk exposure must not become baggage carted around by rapid infrastructure expansion. The costs of getting it wrong are staggering. According to IBM’s 2025 Cost of a Data Breach Report, the global average breach now costs US$4.88 million.

Agentic AI. In security, I’ve seen how AI can transform operations. But tech alone isn’t the answer. The real challenge is helping people adapt. When teams feel supported and trained, adoption sticks... and innovation works. It’s never just about the tech. It’s about the people who use it.

I've spent over 25 years working in AI & Digital, and we're past the point of asking if the technology will transform work. The question is how fast.

Tech alone doesn’t make a security program effective. People do.

I’ve seen high-end systems fail because teams weren’t prepared to act. Mentoring, hands-on exercises, and real-world experience turn tools into results.

Context, judgment, adaptability... can’t be automated.

AI can’t fix everything on its own. In security, it works when teams get it, know it, and can actually use it. Change sticks when tech meets people who understand it.
