Today in 1956, a B-47 making a touch-and-go landing at RAF Lakenheath, 20 miles northeast of Cambridge, England, veered off the runway, smashed into a storage igloo holding three unarmed Mark-6 atomic bombs, and exploded.

Today in 1952, Los Alamos theoretical physicist and nuclear weapons designer Ted Taylor used a parabolic mirror and a 15-kiloton nuclear explosion (Shot GEORGE) detonated atop a 300-foot tower in Nevada to light a Pall Mall cigarette. Taylor designed the lightweight “Scorpion” device for the test.

Ever heard of the 'Batwing Otter'?

It was an experimental DeHaviliand Otter with large 'Batwing' flaps, which ultimately got a General Electric J-85 jet engine installed inside the fuselage with STOL-augmenting thrust diverters peering through the sides.
