A Dangerously Silly English Major
Totally agree. From her first chapter I had a feeling this is where we were going. She just wanted some semblance of love, but with someone who could not give it back in the way she needed. #367britlit
#367britlit MT: Carmel feels she has to overcompensate to cover her affair by leaning into conservative views and the role of her marriage that is in opposition to Barry’s actions.

Our girlie "George" getting lost in the computer maze was me trying to understand the footnotes. My English major brain was like:

"So you are human Okwe." After mentioning the Never Let Me Go similarities, I feel this line has that same impact. The people who do "donate" their organs are treated like cattle. This time, they do get something. But it comes at a great cost.

The usage of footnotes in Lovelace and Babbage is what really drives the humor home for me. #367britlit

(MT) We have come full circle! Lovelace and Babbage's very 4th-Wall-Breaking format is a callout to how British history has suppressed the accomplishments of minoritys and women to only literal "footnotes." #367britlit

It is interesting how Senay always looks up at the camera in the hotel. Her obvious paranoia about London's surveillance culture is understandable, especially after the scene where the immigration agents bust into her home to scare and threaten her with deportation. Relevant moment.

"You're an illegal. You have nothing. You are nothing." Sadly, this is still the attitude we have towards refugees/immigrants in the year 2025. If someone came somewhere, even if illegally, give them access to the resources that can make them legal. There is a reason for every route. #367britlit

"Is there a problem? I don't know. I don't exist do I?" Oh dang... Did someone get murdered? Nope... Wait... Yeah... I don't think hearts belong in the toilet. Is that a message about how immigrants and their hopes and dreams are treated? I think so.

MT: The final chapter, called "The Art of Travel," is symbolic of the new path Barry is traveling in his life. Travel allows a person to expand their perspectives and see new thing. Barry is becoming more aware of the world he is living in rather than the one he has built in his mind #367britlit

I was pleasantly surprised we got a happy ending! Everyone seemed to have found where they belonged, and I loved Morris' last line, "Enjoy the vibes man, enjoy the vibes.”

#367britlit MT: Carmel seems to represent the opposite of Barry. She feels guilt for seeking attention from other men, tries to live a conservative lifestyle, and listens closer to women than men. She challenges Barry's viewpoints the same way he challenges her which allows for self-discovery.

(MT) Barry slowly but surely attempts to push everyone out of his life so that he can start fresh properly. He already feels as if his family doesn't care for him, so he subconsciously upsets them in conversation to keep himself from the grief that ripped him up at his brother's funeral.

“Life goes on no matter what you feelin… No matter that you’re crying and feel like dying. Shape up Carmel! Shape up and look after your family!” You can't help but feel for Carmel after this. That's not how depression works. This is why she remains in misery. She can't just "shape up." #367britlit

(MT) This line "It's what I'm used to. It makes me feel safe," is a great emphasis on why Barry has chose to live the life he did. The fear of what would happen to him if he strayed away from his expected path had made him choose the safe option, but it made him unhappy. #367britlit
