Structure is the Salt, Fat, Acid Heat of writing.
3-Act/Hero's Journey etc are recipes.
You can make great meals without using a recipe if you understand the principles of structure.

I just bought a bottle of Walgreens brand mouth wash, a pack of Walgreens brand toothbrushes, and one tube of (name brand) toothpaste.

I would have assumed that fanfic authors getting traditionally published would make the industry wider; this was a great read on the argument as to why fanfic-turned-book feeds into corporate franchising, and makes the space for creativity smaller.
