I can also do arms race dynamics with my model. This is an old run, of the red queen being chased through genome space. Do you see Punctuated Equilibrium? perhaps it's in the eye of the beholder. I was also curious to see if the red queen has momentum, perhaps we could weigh her! #Alife

Been doing the bilingual marriage for a few decades now. Sometimes it frustrating but never boring. Today I explained that they’re not railway pillows but sleepers. Pillows perhaps makes more sense.

youtu.be/2XUKxM7ZBao?... Now that’s got me wondering about trajectories of species across holey landscape neutral networks. Maybe applicable to red queen dynamics
How far can we push the utilities problem?

www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3608... from what I’m hearing bear attacks are happening almost every day now, in Japan. Something like 8 people killed since April. I don’t think I even heard of bear attacks in the 90s.
Kiwi's arm 'fully snapped' in Japanese bear attack
A Kiwi living in Japan had his arm broken and calf muscles punctured when he was attacked by a bear in the foothills of Myoko.

There was and still is, to much lesser degree, a trade for those who put scissors together. They were called putter-togetherers.

youtu.be/GhramXiUrY4?... very sad news. Robert was an inspirational amateur scientist who was simply fascinated by everything. One of those people you wished was a friend and could just sit and chat with.

I think I beat my personal best for teaching someone to roll last night. Under ten minutes. Success on the second attempt. Good student, good boat, good paddle sooo much easier. Nice to have an easy one after some the epic struggles I’ve had with some students this year.

Finally got around to explaining to the wife it’s “bottle blond” not “bottled blond” probably should have done this a decade or so ago.

Lying in bed this morning I convinced myself I had a proof that structure is the unit of inheritance not dna sequence. I expect this feeling to wear off by mid day and it will join that scrap heap of ideas that only seemed good in the shower or when half asleep.

Sometimes you’re just looking for an expression to describe a phenomenon. “Latent variation” is what I need to describe the potential variation produced by newly acquired neutrality. It’s like latent heat. Next you find there’s already an expression that you’ve never heard off.

@dominictarr.bsky.social have you played around with angling the foil on the ama inwards so that it gives some downforce. The slippage should give it some AoA perhaps enough for a downforce component. Toying with the idea.

It’s a happy day when one of your kayak rolling students teaches a student how to roll. Especially if they’re not rolling so well themselves ;-)
