Every paragraph in this story about smoke exposure is brutal. I'm starting to question how wildland firefighting is any different from Russian soldiers clearing debris at Chernobyl--except it's in much slower motion & we all keep doing things to make it worse. 1/ www.nytimes.com/2025/08/17/u...

This matters. These two training centers are critical to the National Park Service ethic, history, and culture.

Vulgarians run amok, destroying everything that has been painstakingly built over decades.

I appreciate politicians praising those who acted heroically.

I'd appreciate it much more if we could have policies that reduced the number of times people have to act heroically.

We map tsunami zones and flood zones. We have volcanoes. People still buy/build in and around those areas. A state-level fire map meant to inform should be no different--the insurance companies already have similar info. Ignoring risk does not remove the risk. (Of course, there's mis/dis info.)

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Many forget that it's a complex & dangerous world as we have done a great job of making it safer, but we can't be complacent or allow the cultivation of intentional ignorance. In this line of work, one can't just rely on personal experiences. Education is critical.

Gift economies often sprout in immediate post-disaster situations. Makes me wonder about how they and a greater culture of reciprocity could contribute to disaster resilient communities while also challenging some of the capitalist forces that generate risk in the first place.

Another good article that shouldn't need to be written.

“I don’t see us having the ability to help outside of our own forest nearly as much as we have in the past.”

This is key. The system is built on mutual aid. If I can't help you or you can't help me, the whole thing fails & more stuff burns.
Just because "firefighters" aren't getting fired doesn't mean wildland firefighting is escaping terminations and resignations unscathed. “It is leaving us woefully unprepared for fire this summer.”

🌊 Three months ago, a DANA devastated Valencia. Every storm and flood teaches us a lesson. We can’t keep making the same mistakes while climate change accelerates. Adaptation isn’t optional—it’s a matter of survival. Learning today can save lives tomorrow.
