The act of joy that is watching the installation of a speed table on a collector road in the heart of Petworth (Illinois Ave. NW)! Perfect timing ahead of the total revamp of Grant Circle over the next year! @petworthsafersts.bsky.social

We need to prioritize safer streets for all users, whether they walk, roll, ride, or drive.

Another neighbor was hit by a driver this morning in Grant Circle. Safety fixes are approved but now wait for resources. The majority of the project has been delayed to Spring 2026.

When DDOT approves traffic safety issues that require electrical work, such as the light at Taylor and NH NW, @pepcoconnect.bsky.social can often delay these fixes for months+. These delays mean numerous avoidable crashes and injuries continue. We need a better way to compel PEPCO to act faster.

Something that often gets overlooked in community discussions about street safety improvements is the role safer streets play in helping inequity issues. If we talk about dangerous driver behavior towards women, bike lanes are more than just recreational activity.

In the past few days there have been two significant crashes at 4th and New Hampshire. In one a driver went over the pedestrian island, that itself was a partial fix to try and make this crossing safer. Families use this crosswalk to try to cross NH for several routes to schools.

Please take a moment to send an email to DDOT telling them you support the proposed safety improvements at Grant Circle. A quick email saying how you use the circle and your support would help. Email is in the link below:

Two easy tasks you can do today to make streets safer in Petworth. First, DDOT is looking to install a traffic signal at Taylor & New Hampshire to make this intersection safer.

Send an email in support before April 21. Email and details can be found here: ddotwiki.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/...

Our streets should protect the most vulnerable users. This is a policy failure when residents have to create safety fixes because drivers are not stopping for children.
