How many upgrades do we have left?

Fast tech’s race to upgrade bears a growing responsibility for the climate crisis.

The digital industry accounts for 4% of total carbon emissions, and is predicted to account for 14% by 2040.

Let’s end fast tech.

So powerful.
After Trump was elected the first time, there was also a lot of talk about making iPhones in the US. At the time, I co-edited the sci-fi outlet Terraform, and asked @timmaughan.bsky.social to imagine what such a future might really look like.

With his permission, I'm republishing the story in full:

In @nature.com we show that humans lived in rainforests ~150,000 years ago – over double the previous oldest estimate. Their presence in West Africa’s rainforests demonstrates the spread of early humans and places ecological diversity at the heart of our species.

When I went viral last year with a post about the Rhône glacier, I was ridiculed by many for being concerned about the retreat.

40% loss in 1/4 of a century is massive. The fact it's accelerating should be alarming. The speed of retreat is a visceral sign of the crisis we are in.
