damn, sorry bsky sucks! i still don't see it that way but it seems we'll have to agree to disagree because having to repeatedly create text files sounds really annoying lol. my condolences

i think the vast majority of ai art is bad. but you don't have to throw entire experimental traditions out the window to say that.
(also, my examples are all musical just because that’s the field i have the most knowledge of. i see no reason why similar principles shouldn’t apply elsewhere)

i genuinely don't understand the idea that all details of a piece not created directly by the artist's hand "don't count" towards its artistic value. i do not accept the premise that the sole purpose of art is for the artist to convey their ideas to the audience

back in the *80s* Roland Kayn was wrangling feedback systems into generating longform pieces without any input beyond initial parameters. field recordings intended to be listened to as music are a thing!

John Cage used the I Ching (really, misused, but that's another conversation) to randomly construct entire compositions. Keith Rowe's made a venerable career out of, among other things, live usage of the random outputs of an FM radio.

there's a long history of artworks that i love which attempt to function as purely sensory experiences, maximally distant from the influence of the artist. sometimes there is value in art outside of what the artist put there. sometimes that's most of the value of an artwork, even!

this whole thread displays an approach to art that is remarkably alien to mine haha. if you define the purpose of art to be communication directly from the artist to the audience, yeah ai art won't fare well, but plenty of other (largely better) art won't either.
