From the brilliant @jerusalem.bsky.social on why we can’t build green energy projects (excerpt from “On the Housing Crisis”). On point. Modern environmentalism was built to stop projects, not advocate for them - a large reason why housing, transit, green energy is so difficult.

A reminder that It’s A Wonderful Life is a YIMBY story. George Bailey helps people get small loans to build modest homes so they can escape the slumlord H. Potter. The bad guy isn’t a developer, he’s a landlord that hates developers.

I learned about slip coaches watching Thomas the train with my 2 year old. Kids shows are useful for something ;)
Railway Sublime, episode 6.

"The Slip Coach." To keep trains running at speed, but increase the number of passengers transported, the last car of a train was uncoupled while still in motion.

It would then coast to the platform under its own momentum...

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) was discovered by someone studying bacteria living in geysers. Their polymerase proteins can withstand the heat needed to split DNA without themselves being destroyed. So you can hear and cool DNA rapidly to replicate it. Let people study weird things!!
People sometimes make fun of science that sounds stupid and random.

Meanwhile, a study of lizard saliva turned into a peptide medication, which was turned into a diabetes medication, which was turned into a GLP1 weight loss drug, that just became the first therapy every approved for … sleep apnea
Breaking News: The FDA approved use of the weight loss drug Zepbound for a common form of sleep apnea. It is the first drug authorized to treat the disorder.

A constant frustration in Calgary (and other cities I’m sure) is the ubiquity and impunity by which drivers violate basic road rules. Running red lights, turning right where there are “no right on red” signs, not yielding to pedestrians. Oh and rampant speeding. It’s infuriating.

@bsky.app please please please update the feed so that I don’t have to scroll down to find out where I left off. I want to read posts in chronological order, not reverse. Do this, and I’ll find this site 1000x more user friendly.

One critique of Bluesky I have is that the timeline updates with the most recent posts displayed, and you have to scroll down to find where you left off, rather than being updated from where you left off & you scroll to get caught up. Haven’t figured a way to reconfigure this. Anyone have any tips?

Want to read about how police falsify and downgrade crime data, how teachers cheat on tests, why traffic metrics make no sense, why providing incentives to employees can demotivate them and how focusing on metrics can lead to counter-productive results? Read Bad Data. I think you’ll enjoy it.
