If you knew me on FB at any point on the past 20 years, this is why my account is gone. FB disabled it at the same time as sending me this - while I was online, with zero warning - and I'm not giving their AI a 3d scan of my head to prove who I am.

Went to the National Aquarium in #Napier to feed #kororā for my birthday. This is Captain (the '20 Penguin of the Year), wondering why I'm not making with the fish already. He ended up getting 5 sprat during this one of his three daily feelings.

Went out on a Black Cat cruise from #Akaroa again, and watched this one Hectors #dolphin jump into and and bounce off of the other 🤣

The One slightly behind is coming is quickly and is about to jump slightly out of the water onto its podmate. This species has a dorsal fin that is rounded and looks like a Mickey Mouse ear rather than the classic fin shape of other dolphins. The One slightly behind has jumped slightly out of the water onto its podmate, causing a splash as that one is pushed into the water, while the jumper has been captured in the moment of bouncing off its podmate. This species has a dorsal fin that is rounded and looks like a Mickey Mouse ear rather than the classic fin shape of other dolphins.

I just liked the colors and the clarity of their reflections even if it wasn't the exact angle I wanted. These pigeons were hanging out on a pylon at the #Picton Ferry Terminal.

An adorable at-risk #kākā enjoying a snack at a feeding station at #Zealandia. Females are especially vulnerable to introduced stoats when nesting, so males outnumber them 5:1. Introduced possums compete for nectar, restricting breeding conditions.

Two years ago today, I hosted my last crawfish boil. Not on purpose, but Life happened before the ones I would have had in 2024, and I left the country before the first one I would have had this year.

I'm lucky and grateful to have so many great (and delicious!) memories with wonderful people.

Juvenile and adult black-backed gulls having a disagreement over who's snack it is. The juvenile is brown and grey mottled, standing up to a full-grown adult who had their wing outstretched to and behind them as they get close to the juvenile, who has their wings partially open. Red-branded guild. 2 sure on the water looking calm, one sits if the water with wings back mod-flap, and the first gull is in the process of trying to drag a big chunk of guts and skin out of the water. Their wings are curved around them and over their head as they backwing hard to try to take off with their prize. 4 seagulls sit calmly on the dark water as a fifth tries hard to take off with a huge snack Two gulls go after a piece of fish guts and skin, one tugging with a bite in it's break trying to backwing away, and the other in the process of landing just behind the first. The water is deep, dark blue, with red reflecting off the fishing vessel from which their snack came.

The side-eye game is STRONG. I was sad to hear several adults coughing (not in warning), and wondered how many dead pups is normal to see on a visit this time of year (I saw 6). Really want to learn more.

I got to briefly meet Arwen and Aragorn, a pair of Little White Flippered #Penguins at the #Pohatu Conservation Trust in Flea Bay a couple days ago. 😍 Support important efforts (conservation, rehabilitation, reforestation, predator control, education, etc) at www.pohatu.co.nz/Trust/adopt-...
Guide largely off camera crouching behind a wooden penguin box marked with a plastic tag that says, "B38." The simple box is on on dry dirt and pine needles, lifting the lid to check in on the mated pair of Little White-Flippered Penguins inside. Tourists get a brief, special glimpse of these shy creatures as their guide (Ben, in this case) checks the birds and notes the time, date, number of penguins there, and their condition in their special app. The encounter is brief, and cut extra-short if the penguins make any sign if distress or unhappiness. This feathered couples' names are Arwen and Aragorn, named by the person who sponsored the box.
