Hallo 👋 I'm Peggy, an #ecologist interested in #biodiversity monitoring. My research asks questions like What is biodiversity? How do we 'measure' it? When have we lost 'too much'? 🐯

To do this, I use sensors: #cameratraps📷, audio🔊or soon, eDNA 👀🧬 and AI analysis techniques!

🚁 New paper worked on by #OurImperial @sarabssethi.bsky.social shows that robotics-assisted acoustic surveys using UAVs can deliver reliable, landscape-level biodiversity insights!

Robotics‐assisted acoustic surveys could deliver reliable, landscape‐level biodiversity insights
Deploying and maintaining sensors is often a major bottleneck in collecting rapid biodiversity data. We tested whether autonomous hopping drones equipped with acoustic recorders could collect reliabl....

What if sensor equipped drones could autonomously hop around landscapes to survey biodiversity?

Would data be reliable? Could we adapt survey design in real-time?

This and more in our latest @zslofficial.bsky.social RSEC publication led by @peggybevan.bsky.social

#Ecologists look set to be the next scapegoat to cover the government's failings

📢 I have a new pre-print out with @sarabssethi.bsky.social, where we show that robotic-assisted #acoustic monitoring can deliver automated #biodiversity surveys. 🐒🦜 Drone assisted #PAM works well for coarse patterns of biodiversity, but less well for species-specific details.

Robotics-assisted acoustic surveys could deliver reliable, landscape-level biodiversity insights
Terrestrial remote sensing approaches, such as acoustic monitoring, deliver finely resolved and reliable biodiversity data. However, the scalability of surveys is often limited by the effort, time and...

Really enjoyed visiting Camden School for Girls sixth formers yesterday to talk about careers in #biology! It feels very promising to get so many great questions about biodiversity and conservation from the students 😊

#Glastonbury25 but less cool. spent last week in a very boggy farm near the famous festival site with @naturemetrics-edna.bsky.social, setting up sensors designed to collect airborne DNA! 🧬 By setting these up at known distances from a bat roost 🦇, we will reveal more on the #ecology of airborne DNA

🌟new paper🌟 the first chapter of my thesis is out in #ecography ! We present #regionalbiomes as a novel spatial unit for global biodiversity monitoring frameworks 🌏 This unit could increase resolution on biodiversity trends 📈 whilst keeping data collection feasible 📋🏞 doi.org/10.1111/ecog...
Regional Biomes outperform broader spatial units in capturing biodiversity responses to land‐use change
Biogeographic context, such as biome type, has a critical influence on ecological resilience, as climatic and environmental conditions impact how communities respond to anthropogenic threats. For exa....

SHOWING NOW AT UCL East: some brilliant compositions by BBC Young composer award winners, using nature sound clips from the Biome Health Project. Played on a very special Icosahedral (21 sides!) Speaker! Go check it out! 🎶🦜🦐🐘 @ucl-pnl.bsky.social
