The Limerick Pedestrian Network is working to make Limerick better for (and because of) everyday walking. Mailing list: http://eepurl.com/g9PEJv
What would make walking better in Limerick? LCCC are developing a Masterplan for Walking! And you can go and tell them - TODAY - what you'd like to see in it. More benches! Slower cars! Faster traffic lights! More pedestrian permeability! Less dog mess! More bins! Wider paths! You tell 'em!

A very good summary by @farronf.bsky.social of a very bad updated plan.
Car dominance has destroyed #LimerickCity for all but a few and this exact imbalance is clear in the (ignored) feedback.

I'm from #Limerick so I know a fair bit about pedestrian-unfriendly places but Thurles feels like they're going for some sort of award!
This blind corner / step to death was my favourite. Douze points!

This report on Easter weekend roads policing is horrifying. It depicts the breakdown of our system of laws and norms around driving. Massive occurrences of speeding, drunk/drug driving widespread, people not bothered wearing seatbelts... and road deaths spiking. This is a crisis.

We send our heartfelt sympathies to the family of the small girl killed in Galway. It is past time for a fundamental transformation of our driving culture, our roads, and road safety in Ireland. Our system is broken, and the most vulnerable are suffering. www.irishcyclingcampaign.ie/2025/04/trag...

Fascinating article on the experience of Newcastle's postwar play streets and the moral order of "mundane governance"

reading this in 2025 in Dublin - lots of parallels with our prioritisation of the unfettered movement of traffic over children's rights to play safely on the streets where they live
Am pleased to say that my article on Newcastle’s postwar play streets has been published www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

It draws attention to how traffic engineers framed streets as too dangerous for children’s play but not dangerous enough to warrant infrastructural changes.

Great to see this #GetLimerickWalking workshop today organised by the Limerick Sports Partnership.

We’re well represented there by committee members Eoin Buckley and Farron Flaherty: hope everyone attending has a really productive morning!

Reminder:

The public consultation info session for the Wickham St to Clare St Active Travel Scheme is TONIGHT (Thursday 6 March) from 6pm to 8pm at the UL City Campus (old Dunnes).

It’ll really improve pedestrian access as well: worth turning up at 6pm!
#Limerick There is an important consulation on Thurs 6th March in the Old Dunnes on Sarsfield St. It's about High St / Wickham St and giving the businesses & residents there a better future. They've done amazing work but need this project & the cost of not doing it could be ruinous. (Long 🧵 1/17)

We KNEW there would be no cars in heaven! Although ironically it appears there's also no atmosphere, so car emissions wouldn't be a problem.
By far the funniest part of this insane post is that even the maniacs who believe this stuff are so media-pilled they refer to it as a 'leaked photo'. As if God, CEO of Heaven Studios, had included it in a press kit for awards season, but embargoed it til January 27th.

Decision made on the proposal by some Limerick councillors to dramatically reduce hours of the bus lane on O’Connell Street:

Basic sanity prevails: the bus lane will REMAIN A BUS LANE

Thanks to all who reminded the mayor & council of the importance of the bus lane.

Best of luck to Eoin today: we’re *very* proud to have him representing the Limerick Pedestrian Network and speaking up for Irish pedestrians at the Road User Safety Forum, which will shape the Irish government’s ongoing road safety strategy until 2030.
Homework / pre-reading ahead of session 2 of the Road User Safety Forum tomorrow in Dublin. Delighted to be representing @pedestrianlk.bsky.social at this important workshop which will help shape #Ireland Road Safety Strategy Phase 2 (2025-2027) as we work towards #VisionZero

Closing the O'Connell Street bus lane would be an immensely backward step for Limerick Council to take. It's incredibly disappointing that some local councillors continue to push the idea.

This cannot be allowed to happen.
