I make beer for a living and for fun. Middle aged ramblings on beer and domestic nonsense. I also grow stuff and keep chickens. Proud member of the Guardian-reading, tofu-eating Wokerati. With a side order of Huddersfield Town.
You’ll all be delighted to hear that I’m not going to show you my meat on this occasion, but I’ve had some beef short ribs in the smoker all day and they were tremendous. Served with proper chips and all manner of fancy sides, it was a contender for Meal of the Year.

The Sunday Gloom is setting in early today, and I suspect it’s gonna hit hard later 😢

Sunday. Coffee made and meat going into the smoker for later. Now for a glorious full day pottering in the garden. If anyone needs me, I’ll be turning my compost.

Oh what the heck, one more. This a Cherry Negroni. I’d hoped to see off the bottle of maraschino cherry liqueur tonight , but more work is needed yet.

Probably the last one for today unless anyone wants to keep me up into the early hours talking bollocks.

A Mary Pickford. Recipe in alt text, blah, etc 🍹

Midori sour, and another bottle bites the dust #CocktailNight

Those who knew me back in the days of Twitter may recall when I did a sale of home-made soap for charity one Xmas.

I can’t be arsed doing it again, but I was going to give a load away for free this year (cos I’ve made too much), but then I saw what postage costs nowadays. Fuck that!

I had the dregs of a bottle of Midori and another of Kahlúa to use up, so behold the Melon White Russian! It tastes better than it looks.

Recipe in alt text.

Cocktail night update:

No cocktails made yet.

More cocktail night news:

I have a few almost empty bottles that I could do to use up ahead of the festive restocking. There may be some new drinks “invented” this evening 🍹

I feel a cocktail night coming on.

The Firework Twats are hard at it again, and just like on Wednesday night we’re at Ground Zero.

With World War III seemingly going on out back, I wouldn’t be surprised if our chickens are dead because of fright in the morning. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time.

Ok then! The beginnings of a green tomato curry. This could be great… or a disaster.
November 2, 2025 at 4:40 PM
Green tomato curry for tea I reckon. And probably a batch of salsa too.

And so this year’s gentle progress down the Coastal Path comes to an end in Hornsea.

Back at Easter to continue south, and also to start the eastern section of the Trans-Pennine Trail.

Coastal Path completed so far: 250 miles

I’m no beer snob these days, but there’s really no excuse for a dirty glass like this 🤢

I’ve made the poshest shellfish and chorizo stew ever. A task made even more impressive by the fact that we’re in a holiday cottage where all the knives are blunt and there is only one pan 🦀 🦞 🦐 😋

North Landing. Again.

The public footpath down the Holderness coast only officially opened a couple of weeks ago, so since we’re nearby we’re making a start on it this week. It’s pretty dreary to be honest, and most of it is falling into the sea. Interesting though, and bleakly beautiful in places. Also we saw dolphins.

Pub 11 and the last one for today. The Ship Inn Sewerby. Pennine Brewery Black Forest is absolutely tip top, and yes, I’ve been on pints for a while now despite saying I’d stick to halves.

Anyway. Back to ours? I have beer and whisky.

Pub 10, The George. A really top notch pint of Purity Mad Goose (yes, I know) but this is a bit rough and ready even for me.

Pub 9, The Dog House. Hidden away up a back passage - stop sniggering at the back - and another really nice modern boozer. Decent cask line up, cosy decor and friendly locals. Mint.
