More singles by people from my autograph collection.

I collect all sorts of things besides records. Too many things! Footy programmes, comics, trading cards, all things James Bond and Batman related, and autographs of people I admire (or whose work I admire in some cases). So this weekend it’s singles by people I have autographs of.

Listen Without Prejudice is great, but I think They Won’t Go When I Go is a dirge. The original isn’t much better.

If you know Disraeli Gears you already know which track I’m talking about. If not, turn it off before the last track. You’ll thank me!

4 fab rap albums to consider.

The Left - Gas Mask
Quakers - Quakers
Kooley High - Eastern Standard Time
Edward Scissortongue - Better. Luck. Next. Time.

All worthy of your time, if you haven’t heard them.

Not sure what my other 4 will be yet (i.e. I need to work out which albums are debuts!), but John Grant’s Queen of Denmark will almost certainly be my No.1.

Once we get into the 21st century it gets a bit tricky to determine what a debut album is. In hip hop you get a stack of different rapper/producer pairings, each of whom could lay claim to umpteen ‘debut’ albums.

And then there are those who record under umpteen different names…

#12inchTuesday

Sodding heck. I remembered it was Tuesday when I was at the cinema, watching a rubbish rom-com that my daughter wanted to see. So a bit later than planned, here’s part 3 of my 80s theme, 20 favourite 80s 12” Singles. Well, sort of favourites anyway.

16 favourite 80s B-Sides, the names of which are in the alt. text.

I had to use the 12” for some of them, because the one by The Dream Academy is only on the 12”. It’s a superior version (according to me!) of one of their best album tracks.

I was taking the last photo for tomorrow earlier, but then went on to photo my 12” singles for Tuesday (that turned into a palaver!) and I pulled out a single I should have included with my favourite 80s singles, so here it is. I only have this on 12”, hence missing it out.

Back to the 80s this week. This is part 1, 16 of my favourite 80s singles today. Favourite 80s B-Sides tomorrow (one of today’s 16 will be included) and favourite 80s 12” singles on Tuesday.

Point of note, the Prefab Sprout song is Goodbye Lucille #1, not Johnny Johnny!

I’m doing this project where I’m ranking every album I have on CD, Vinyl or MP3 for each year. I originally thought it would take 2-3 years. I started in 2016!

Problem is, I keep exploring new genres and adding to it. I’m making headway now though and I’m currently on 1998.

Any favourites here?

Some more singles by solo artists and their bands, including a Jeff Lynne/Roy Wood special and a couple of bands and duos.

“I’m not planning on going solo” fibbed George Michael. Well, here he is, solo and with his group, along with many more who decided they didn’t need the band. And Stephen Duffy, who was in loads of bands.

After several weeks of procrastinating, I’ve decided on my 5, so I opened up the app to list them, only to find I’m a week early. I’d like to think I’ll just wait and submit the 5 I’ve gone for next Friday…but my mind doesn’t work like that. Back to the procrastinating then!

I’ve seen a lot of love for Pelican West, but I think Nick’s debut solo album is just as good. And now that I’ve looked at it I’m going to have Take That Situation in my head for the next 3 days!

More singles of varying taste that I like or love.

Darts and The Barron Knights were favourites of mine when I was 8 years old and I like them both still, particularly Darts.

I’m not bothered about Too Late For Goodbyes, but I’ve included it for the fab B-Side, Well I Don’t Know

Picked these up the other day whilst sleeve shopping.

First one is a heavy old shellac 7” of C Penrose’s The Laughing Policeman in a lovely Victory sleeve.

And 3 more shop sleeves.

Finally, a Gloria 45 one. Does anyone know this label, as I can’t find any info on it.

As everyone knows, I’m cooler than Fonzie. I like rap and jazz and reggae and cool things.

BUT…there’s always a but isn’t there…I also like stuff (to a varying degree) that people might call ‘Marmite’, and most people think Marmite is horrible!

Some comments [Excuses - Ed.] below.

I’m going to sign up to the executive version of the poll, so I can submit all 11 of my shortlist. Narrowing it down to 5 causes much more stress than is really necessary.

Either way, Vs. by Mission of Burma will be on my list.

When we were young my mum used to get us the KTel compilation every Xmas. I picked this up for 99p the other day, purely out of nostalgia. Some absolute classic songs and some absolutely horrible ones. This is why David Soul’s Silver Lady has always been one of my favourite songs.

Okay, I said I wouldn’t include rap albums, but I changed my mind.

The artist/titles are in the alt. text and I’ll say a bit more about a few of them in the comments.

These will be well known to rap fans, but they’re all accessible for those who aren’t rap fans yet

Okay, 16 under appreciated albums. I’ve steered clear of rap albums, in case we do a genre weekend in the future.

I’ll give further details on them all in the comments.

Dead 80s pop stars part 2

Honestly, there’s loads of them. Watching a 1980s TOTP is like watching the obituary reel at the Oscars.

By my reckoning, the deadliest 80s hit is You’ll Never Walk Alone by The Crowd. I counted at least 25 of the participants who’ve popped their clogs.

Last week was pop stars still alive in their 80s, but this week it’s 80s singles by pop stars not still alive. Details are in the alt text.

Apologies to the still alive Harry Casey, of KC and the Sunshine Band, who I photographed before realising I’d mixed him up with Dan Hartman!
