Wrote a terrifyingly vulnerable thing about terminal illness and loss - an extremely rare foray, for me, into something which has no mention of movies. Hope someone somewhere likes it or relates to it, I guess.

Also just watched THE SMASHING MACHINE, the John Hyams HBO doc that inspired the upcoming Safdie/The Rock UFC film. 1) absolutely phenomenal doc 2) no one is ready for the upcoming discourse around Emily Blunt’s character

THE FINAL RECKONING is THE DARK KNIGHT RISES of the franchise: messy, ludicrous, often outright intelligence-insulting, and fatally high on its own farty mythos, but the action film-making is ecstatic and few blockbusters can match the combination of blunt political sincerity and dizzying scale

It’s taken this latest wheeze about how everyone would be speaking German if it weren’t for the US for me to realise that Trump and Otto from A Fish Called Wanda are basically the same guy

Ted Kotcheff was there when the worst possible thing that could happen in a live production happened. On 30th Nov 1958 during transmission of Armchair Theatre - Underground - actor Gareth Jones died. This superb Oliver Wake piece recounts what happened. www.britishtelevisiondrama.org.uk/?p=4313

RIP Ted Kotcheff. I think if you directed WAKE IN FRIGHT, FIRST BLOOD, NORTH DALLAS FORTY *and* WEEKEND AT BERNIE’S, you have an objectively strong case for being the greatest to ever do it. I don’t make the rules!

Switch 2 presentation was a lot of old games and ‘huh!’…but the £379 price point is perfect, new Mario Kart looks great and there is so much promise on the horizon. I’m mildly disappointed but still think they basically nailed it. And the wheelchair basketball game looks legitimately incredible.

This is why you can’t win when recommending horror films to non-sickos: recommend something entry level and you get hit with the frankly emasculating ‘oh, it wasn’t even that scary’; recommend something that actually freaks them out and you’re a deplorable sadist 🤷‍♂️
