Very sad news. A fantastic actor. Not great at politics. But Latin American philanthropic work was sound. Best performance: with DeNiro in True Confessions (1981).

The latest calamity at Tottenham clearly isn't about Thomas Frank's managerial and coaching abilities. The club is in turmoil, the players lack discipline and ambition. The departure of Postecoglu, Levy and now Frank is a pattern not a one-off. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/footba...

These extraordinary revelations aren't just some kind of Ministerial Code breach, they're surely criminal offences?
There's more.

On 31 March 2010, Lord Mandelson's principal private secretary sent him a note of a meeting between the Chancellor of the Exchequer and Larry Summers, US Treasury Secretary.

Lord Mandelson forwarded it to Jeffrey Epstein five minutes later.

Cally Councillor, Sara Hyde, makes her first speech as a member of the House of Lords
Cally Councillor Sara Hyde made her first ("maiden") speech in the House of Lords yesterday, Thursday 29th January. Sara gave one of the most memorable first speeches heard in Britain's second legislative chamber. Sara recounted the influences and inspirations in her background, most of all the people of the Cally and Bemerton estate where she lived for many years. She pledged to "always give my very best as I act justly, love mercy and walk humbly" as a member of the House of Lords. In her speech, Sara recounted her 20+ years living and working around Caledonian Road and how she chose the title “Baroness Hyde of Bemerton” so that "I would never, ever forget where I came from nor lose sight of whom I am here to serve and to ensure a functioning democracy for."

Labour's Cally team: Paul, Una and Oliur The three Labour candidates for Caledonian Ward at the May 2026 local elections have now been chosen. Current Councillors Paul Convery and Una O'Halloran are now joined by Oliur Rahman. This follows Cllr Sara Hyde decision to step-down after 8 years representing the ward. Sara has been appointed to the House of Lords and is already a busy member of Labour's team of "working peers". Oliur says: "I’ve received so many kind messages, calls, and emails from our MP, councillors, officers, and activists. I’m truly grateful for all the support.

This is a very lucid argument. Summarised: The problem "is not environmental regulation itself, but an adversarial planning system that incentivises pre-emptive risk aversion.

Text of Trump's ramble in Davos. It's worth reading just to understand how absolutely venal he is. And utterly tone deaf. Claimed USA won WW2 and “without us, you’d all be speaking German.” He said this in Switzerland where the majority language is German. www.weforum.org/stories/2026...
Davos 2026: Special Address by US President Donald J Trump
While speaking at Davos 2026, Trump highlighted his administration's economic achievements, discussed NATO and outlined his vision for Greenland, adding he would not take it with force.

This is a disgusting thing that Trump said. Britain’s forces took 457 deaths from combat in Afghanistan. He has a fucking nerve, go tell the British Army they weren’t on the front line in Kandahar.
Trump on NATO: "I've always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That's really the ultimate test. I'm not sure of that. We've never needed them. They'll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan and this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, off the front lines."

Four very difficult, very salient urgent questions in the Commons today.
I have granted the following urgent questions in the @houseofcommons.parliament.uk today.

From Sir Mel Stride MP to ask Rachel Reeves MP, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, if she will make a statement on planned changes to business rates for the retail, hospitality, and leisure sectors.
(1/5)
The House of Commons sits from 2.30pm today.

The #OrderPaper is published each sitting day and lists the business of the House.

Business for the coming week is announced on Thursdays but is subject to change.

If this is really provably true, then all those people around Trump, the military leadership, the Senate and House, the tech Bros and the corporate titans, just have to say no to him.
(NYT) - President Trump is now claiming that one reason he is pushing to acquire Greenland is that he didn’t win the Nobel Peace Prize, according to a message he sent to Norway’s prime minister over the weekend.

This is not a "silly" idea at all. Might be a good opportunity for EUFA to demonstrate a bit of backbone too.
It might sound silly, but I mean it: The easiest and most potent way for Europe to hurt Trump this year is to once again use its cultural soft power and to threaten a boycott of the World Cup. It would become a completely meaningless event and would hurt him where he is most vulnerable - his vanity.

It would be so much better if we did not have Mandelson on TV “explaining”. An extended period of silence preferred. Perhaps this is step 1 in yet another attempt to rehabilitate a reputation that is totally trashed.

In the list of very good reasons for older people to to stay in London (or move here) is healthcare. It's true, everyone, everywhere has NHS services. But London is head and shoulders above the rest of the country with some of the world's best hospitals, life science research and medical staff.
