Picture me screaming this one from a rooftop. My hands gesturing wildly, my voice growing hoarse. This matters so much. Please consider giving it some time—for the kids.

Power on, California Dept. of Education!
It is Friday afternoon of a wild, wild week. And yet for me a reassuring one. My greatest fear was not of what they would do. It's that we would let them. And I'm seeing a lot of beautiful intransigence. From federal workers. From people all over the country obstructing ICE....

On a trip and instead of posting photos to IG for the benefit of the meta-dude, I’m texting them directly to friends who are interested and I kinda love it. Feels old-school and subversive

This list by Courtney Martin of ways to face political grief by taking action locally is inspiring. There’s something for everybody! open.substack.com/pub/courtney...
'You're more powerful than you think'
I know a lot of us are feeling another wave of grief and anger over the direction this country is going in, at least on the national stage.

Oooh! 🤩
Like so many of you, my friend @maggiesmithpoet.bsky.social and I have been having a conversation about this country’s future.

Now we’re turning our dialogue into a book featuring poems and essays from Marlon James, Alexander Chee, Ashley C. Ford, Chase Strangio, Imani Perry and more!

My wishlist for Substack. Come find me?

Dear Substack, please bring me curious folks who:
⭐️ Are concerned about how much childhood has changed in recent decades
⭐️ Are especially riled up about kids’ losses in independence and creativity…

The TikTok ban permanently reshapes the ideological tilt of the online creator landscape towards the right. Cheering for it in any way is extremely shortsighted www.usermag.co/p/the-great-...
The Great Creator Reset
The TikTok ban isn't just a platform reconfiguration, it will reshape the political leaning of the creator economy and permanently alter whose voices get heard online.

I’m distraught about the tiktok ban. My writing looks at topics that get sidelined—I’m a former public school teacher whose “expertise” came as longtime homeschooling parent—I couldn’t get essays, op-eds past media gatekeepers. I write on losses in independence & creativity for kids in past 30 yrs

Of course the one social platform that actually shares my stuff & which has allowed me to connect w/a substantial number of folks is likely to be shut down. I learned a lot from being there—testing ideas via videos & getting feedback provided proof of concept for my manuscript. 😞

I have mixed feelings about establishments that frown on laptop use but allow writing in notebooks. I’m as romantic about the analog as anyone, but it’s all writing. Don’t love how old-school forms get praised while the modern gets pilloried.

In its first week on the platform & with 300k followers, Bluesky traffic from @theguardian.com posts is already higher than it was from TwX in any week in 2024, where the account had 10.8m followers, but🧵
