It builds on the successes of the first 3 years of his administration and calls for proven, effective investments in our Commonwealth.

Philadelphia's Rev. Leon Sullivan was a Baptist minister, a civil rights leader and social activist.

In the 1950s & 60s, Sullivan led “selective patronage” boycotts of local companies deemed to discriminate against African Americans in their hiring.

Frankford's Caroline LeCount was a teacher and activist.

100 years before Rosa Parks, LeCount rode Philadelphia's street cars and filed petitions to have a law against Black riders repealed.

She also pushed for the rights of Black teachers and students,

Rev. LeRoy Patrick was a minister and civil rights activist in Pittsburgh. He served as pastor of the Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Homewood for more than 30 years.

He fought to desegregate swimming pools in Pittsburgh.

Cecil B. Moore was an American lawyer, politician and civil rights activist who led protests to desegregate Girard College in 1964.

He also served as president of the Philadelphia NAACP chapter and as a member of Philadelphia's City Council.

C. DeLores Tucker, of Philadelphia, was a civil rights activist and politician.

Tucker marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma in 1965.

She became the first black Secretary of State when she was appointed to the position by PA Gov. Milton Shapp.

A teacher, activist and politician, K. Leroy Irvis was the first Black Speaker of the House in any state legislature in the United States since Reconstruction.

The Democrat served as Speaker from 1978 to 1988 in Pennsylvania.

The life of Octavius Catto -- an intellectual, civil rights activist & athlete – was cut short when he was killed during election-day violence in Philadelphia in 1871. 

Catto was among a number of African Americans killed to prevent their voting.

Educated in Reading, Daisy Lampkin was an activist in both the women’s suffrage and civil rights movement.

Lampkin fought for people’s right to vote as a speaker, fundraiser, organizer and political activist in Pittsburgh. She died in 1965.
