Recovering engineer, thinks traveling is cool and either the world is too big or life too short.
I came up with a new phrase today after riding my bike in the misty rain here in the Pacific Northwest, "optimistically defiant", that happy feeling you get when you buck the car centered world.

Just left the Greek island of Ithaca, which wins the prize for the best smelling place on earth!

Just spent a couple of days in #Haarlem Netherlands. It's my favorite place to recover after flying over from #PDX. The last time I was here was in 2022 and I'm just astounded by the number of bakfiets here now, it's quite a revolution.

Leaving #PDX for a European adventure.

Am I a bad grandfather for teaching my grandkids how to play poker? I know I'm a bad poker player since they cleaned me out.

As a recent transplant to #Eugene OR, I still can't get over just how good the bicycle infrastructure is. It's actually useful, I can even ride to Costco, which means now I need cargo bike for that 48 roll pack of toilet paper....

Nothing is more quintessentially Oregonian than the Enchanted Forest near Salem. I got to spend a day with the grandkids there, it's a breath of fresh air.

Just got home from the SLUG queen pageant in #Eugene. It's wonderful to see a community come together just to play.

After hearing lots of folks recommending the new Superman movie, my partner and I went down to the wonderful Metro theater in Eugene to see it. Wow, what a disappointment.

I was just binge listening (is that a thing? it should be) to Al Stewart. I was surprised he wasn't a history major, as it's obvious he shares a love for it.

Took a short trip to Cape Canaveral to see the folks and got to see three space launches in two days, very cool

By chance I was able to visit the Manzanar Japanese-American Internment camp. Very timely, since this was the last time when an administration ignored the 5th Amendment "No person shall...be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law".

Have we learned nothing?

At the Hands Off rally in Joshua Tree, CA. So many people for such a small town! Nice to know we have allies.

A long time ago, I needed a single credit hour to graduate, so a kind English Prof allowed me to do a special research project on Athol Fugard. Thank you, and you will be missed.

I'm afraid that with the recent administration's move away from electric cars to gasoline, we've consigned our once dominate auto industry to the ash heap of history.

Global sales of combustion engine cars have peaked
To decarbonize road transport, the world must move away from petrol and diesel cars and towards electric vehicles and other forms of low-carbon transport.

I just finished The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. What a beautifully written story, smart, clever and mystical.

I'm trying to avoid being trapped in an echo-chamber of my own preferences and would like to know if anyone has a recommendation for some thoughtful or thought provoking conservatives. Any ideas?

I just read this blurb at: seia.org/research-res...
This is why it matters what the Federal Gov't is doing.

Domestic module manufacturing capacity increased substantially again in the third quarter, by over 9 GW to nearly 40 GW.

Just a shout out to the Intercultura Spanish language school in Sámara Costa Rica. Just finished a two week refresher, mi cabeza es llena.

I'm in Costa Rica now, and one of things I like about travel is that it allows me to appreciate things back home that I take for granted. It occurred to me today the importance of a robust solid waste disposable system. Knowing that trash will get picked up regularly is really nice.

I'm drove my EV (VW ID4) down to LA and have experienced first-hand how over-stretched the public charging infrastructure is. I'm quite optimistic about EVs replacing ICE, but worry that the transition will take longer than hoped and maybe that isn't all bad as the underlying infrastructure matures

Rates of cervical cancer have decreased since a vaccine for human papillomavirus, or HPV, was introduced in 2006.

Now, a new study shows a steep decline in cervical cancer deaths among the first women who were eligible for that vaccine in the US.
