Who wore it better? Our new paper shows that rat OFC supports Bayesian inference of hidden states! With neural correlates of inferred state transitions at the level of single neurons and population-level latent factors. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Giving infectious disease research a break, as promised by the MAHA agenda.

Let's break down what exactly this Executive Order is *really* saying.

Fortunately, I speak fluent anti-vax grifterese & can translate.

Establishing the President's Make America Healthy Again Commission
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered: Section 1.

Gene editing technology began by people studying salt marshes. Ozempic began by folks studying the venom of Gila Monsters. Support for basic science has empowered us to understand our world. Tethering it to applications health has transformed and saved countless lives.

So excited to share our first paper from my PhD! Chasing this question was so rewarding; I hope that comes across in the writing. Thank you @denagoldblatt.bsky.social, @cbellegarda.bsky.social, Cheryl, and Başak for being wonderful teammates and @schoppik.bsky.social for the excellent bluetorial 🤓
Big paper from @paigel.bsky.social in our lab:

Sensory feedback is always crucial for proper development, right? Wrong!

Crazier still, the motor system is the slowest part of a developing reflex circuit!

Surprises abound in this bluetorial c’mon along….

Sensation is dispensable for the maturation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex
Vertebrates stabilize gaze using a neural circuit that transforms sensed instability into compensatory counterrotation of the eyes. Sensory feedback tunes this vestibulo-ocular reflex throughout life....

Beautifully written work led by an incredible former undergrad in my PhD lab! Check it out if you're curious about how sensorimotor circuits assemble 💫
Why is this cool? We think gaze stabilization circuit assembly boils down to “first-come, first-serve”: neurons wire with temporally-available partners. This is a simple solution for wiring a multi-synaptic circuit that spans embryologically-diverse tissue (ear, hindbrain, midbrain). (3/n)

Happy to share my 2nd PhD paper! We use CRISPR, calcium imaging & sequencing approaches to (1) overturn a decades-old model for how a balance circuit develops and (2) redefine the role of motor neurons in circuit assembly. 1/n
