i had to cough this up for ##wipwednesday before i forgot this slam dunk of an opening for my western jayvik au.
A screenshot od a Google Document fanfiction preview. It reads: 1898. In the two years since the bank foreclosed on his father's ranch, Jayce Talis found himself struggling to find steady employment. Men in suits with uncalloused hands showed up saying the west was tamed. He listened to them, ice melting in his whiskey as he did so. Maybe they were right. Maybe the last of the mesteño would give way under the US Military's spurs. Maybe the rolling hills where he saw them run would give way to land development. Maybe he'd lose himself in the bottom of this bottle one of these days. “Excuse me.” Maybe he– “You're an American gunslinger, aren't you?” Maybe someone was talking to him. “Just an unemployed ranch hand, I'm afraid, mister.”
