Monday begins Week 108 of our Zoom writing solidarity group.

We started as a post-earthquake group for students and scholars from Turkey and Syria in March 2023. We expanded for those from/in/working on MENA. 11 PhD students have defended their dissertations.

On the same day that the Mayor of Istanbul and tens of others including his political allies were detained, highlighting how political opposition is criminalised through authoritarian lawfare, it was especially thought-provoking to listen to Máximo Sozzo’s reflections on authoritarianism.
We were delighted to welcome Professor Máximo Sozzo to @lawatleeds.bsky.social with @ccjsleeds.bsky.social as he spoke about the history of authoritarianism, militarisation and policing in Argentina and the relationship between them today
