Why Fiction is More Believable
Introduction I just finished watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, which revolves around fraudulent corporate–government collusion. What struck me wasn’t the plot itself but how compelling...

but 'steal more ideas' is exactly the step you'd fail at if you don't allow yourself to be stuck long enough. cognitively, math is about deeply internalising abstract and indescribable mental motions

even with a library of moves, if you don't know _which_ move to apply, you're still stuck
February 9, 2026 at 5:40 PM
i think mathematics is one of those domains where this is most false

are you ready for when the oxidopleosphere (formerly known as the norvisphere) becomes so mainstream that it goes from occupying that rare interest long tail to a commoditised cultural product

norvid_studies as bourbakian collective or rogue ai agent theory

internetification of markets creates winner-take-most dynamics and race to the bottom for scraps:

dating markets (dating apps & instagram)
labour market (linkedin, global talent pools)
retail (amazon & chinese d2c)
attention markets (long tail of 0 views on yt/spotify)

but that's obviously true

and somehow i never really felt scared during this interaction. unsettled by that guy's vibe but it genuinely didn't register that we could have been screwed if it had gone wrong. one of those things about being a young man i guess

...where i'm from, then where M is from, where specifically in the UK (M is british), where's that, "near london", seems satisfied with the answer and leaves. i pretend to look around the store a bit.
M and i encountered strange npcs every time we smoked weed, it was crazy
February 7, 2026 at 6:26 PM
bc he had the weed on him. so now i'm left alone with this russian guy, who is without question the most unsettling person i've met in my entire life. he keeps up the threatening act a bit more, i keep deflecting with "if we had any more we'd have shared it", etc. now he starts asking (...)
February 7, 2026 at 6:26 PM
he asks a couple more times, and we just keep saying that we just finished it and don't have any more.
but now he switches gear and starts vaguely threatening us: "what would happen if i told someone". soon after this point, M slides out of the conversation and walks out of the 7/11,
February 7, 2026 at 6:26 PM
there's a middle aged russian guy there, and we presumably smell of weed and also look like we'd have it, since we're in that area and all. so, naturally, as one does to strangers, he asks if we have weed. M did have another joint in his pants pocket but of course we said no.
February 7, 2026 at 6:26 PM
friend (let's say M) and i go to a 7/11 in japantown (nightlife-ish area in saigon, tons of bars and "massage" parlours, (as a side note you should visit 'bar commune saigon' if you're ever there, the vibes are immaculate and there's a dj most nights)) after smoking some weed. (...)
February 7, 2026 at 6:26 PM
cat reading newspaper i should have another 8 day bender in vietnam where my friend and i get vaguely threatened by a russian guy for not giving him weed
February 7, 2026 at 4:50 PM
i’m savouring it by spending another early 20s saturday night pondering various theories

that’s why grothendieck never did calculations

substack is linkedin for theatre kids

linkedin formula:
personal anecdote, relation to b2b saas, neat conclusion

substack formula:
personal anecdote about being {in early/mid/late 20s} or {2nd gen immigrant}, universalisation to human experience, ambivalent conclusion about Change or Loss
i read a few people on substack (scott etc) but the "substack vibe" of the "community" has never really appealed to me. maybe it's better now but last time i checked it was too linkedin-adjacent, like if you subtracted the MBA vector from linkedin. striver-y? hard to name but nahmsayin

interesting, didn't know about teleoplexy. since i'm not in the mood to wade through that continentalslop rn, could you tell me if evolution is teleoplexic
February 6, 2026 at 5:16 PM
... 2. the market economy aggregates more information than any individual actor ("superintelligence")
3. this runaway process has attractor state(s) which are "as if" teleological. ("from the future")
February 5, 2026 at 7:42 PM
the more i think about it, the less crazy it seems that capitalism is "an alien superintelligence constructing itself from the future". nick land seems to be saying
1. collective action problems at scale make capital ungovernable ("alien") ...
