Birder in East Yorkshire 🐦
Patch total (Figham Common) = 113 (Hawfinch)

I was glad to see the 2 Taiga Bean Geese last week at Dooey in West Donegal. Having managed brief views of 1 of the 9 Taiga's that had been at Inch, it was a great opportunity to be able to take in the structure and details.
A Pink-footed sleeping in a roadside field made for a much better subject.

Had a feeding Hawfinch on the patch this morning! He gave some nice, clear views before disappearing into the bushes. This section of the patch has turned up some great birds recently - Redstart, Spot Fly, Siskin, Redpoll, and now all the returning Redwings.

Birds in stained glass, freestanding #art or wall sculptures, rarely window panels. My birds are celebrations, explanations, rants and sometimes tears; but like the birds that inspire them, they are all beautiful dancers-with-light…

Had a Great White Egret land, then fly past this morning, and a Redpoll calling too. Both new for #patchbirding!

Up to 100 species for #patchbirding this year. September saw the addition of a Green Sandpiper, Siskins & a Gannet! Also great to have two Spotted Flycatchers at the start of the month, and closing out with 3000 Pink-feet flying over

Please excuse the poor photos, but this Gannet was a very unexpected sight over my inland patch this morning! I also had two calling Siskins, which are another patch first.

Another artwork for the report, a Lesser Whitethroat skulking between branches. Mixing it up by working digitally (aka didn't fancy spending hours on a linocut)

Two new patch ticks from the last week. A flyover Hobby and a juvenile Yellow Wagtail. Equalled my 2024 score of 99 already!

Someone crept up behind me while I was watching other birds. A young Green Woodpecker on the patch again - a month after I last saw one.

I found a Clouded Yellow butterfly on my patch today! Does anyone know their status in Yorkshire? I can only find that 'most years see one or two reports'. It seems like it's a good year for them if that's the case.

The star of the moth trap this morning - not one but two Poplar Hawkmoths! A species that I knew would eventually turn up and I am very pleased it did. Otherwise 61/21 species with Spectacle & Ancylis badiana NFG.

It's been exactly a year now since I had a very bizarre encounter with this Common Scoter, flying along the river that runs on the edge of my inland patch. I wonder if there's a chance it'll happen again over the next few days...

Had an impressive Pale Prominent in the moth trap this morning, and then went birding on a mist-covered patch. Had a high count of 230 Greylags, a few Canada Geese, 40 Barn Swallows resting, and a couple of Common Terns too.

One of my best moth traps yet this morning with 71/31 species - easily crossing over 100 species total for the garden. Highlights were a Ruby Tiger and a Campion.

Visited @spurnbirdobs.bsky.social this morning to look through the moth traps. Big change in numbers since my time there in April! Garden Tiger, Privet Hawkmoth, Oak Eggar (NFY) & Common Rustic were my highlights.
