Some of my colleagues and I shared our thoughts on the end of @postsports.bsky.social

Matthew Kiewiet: "Instead of living in a community we share with our neighbors, friends and family, eventually we’ll just be in some place with other people around us, all on our own, trying to survive."

Devastating news today. Reading the Washington Post sports section is what set me on the course for my entire life and career. It's been part of my daily routine since elementary school. This is an immense loss for the DMV and for the national sports community. (1/4)

Crestfallen and f$&@ furious about the closure as we know it of @postsports.bsky.social by an indifferent, compromised owner and a failing publisher — a dept of Povich and Boswell, Wilbon and Kornheiser, Gildea and Sheinin, of poets, authors, Hall of Famers and Pulitzer finalists. A terrible day.

VCU placed this 2-page ad in The Times-Dispatch today, and the TV broadcast showed the whole student section holding it up before tonight's rivalry game against Richmond. Love the creativity and that they put it in the actual paper instead of just printing it out.

Extremely on brand that the only Winter Olympian from Bethesda is actually a swimmer who didn't take up his winter sport until a few years after college

I love following non-revenue sports, and I'm a fan of both an SEC school and a Big Ten school. But I watch Mizzou teams way more often than Maryland teams because of this exact problem.

hello I am the CEO of the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl. do i decide which teams are in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl? no. do i negotiate the broadcast contract for the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl? Also no. Do I have to figure out where they will play the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl? Not really. My salary is $800,000

When Maryland WBB hosts Wisconsin today, it will finally be the 1st meeting between Brenda Frese and former Mizzou coach Robin Pingeton as head coaches. Both grew up in the Cedar Rapids area and likely played against each other in high school, but the connections don't stop there:

Bowls are silly -- and have been for some time. How much longer can they survive? From columnist @barrysvrlugawp.bsky.social:
Column | With dumb names and no stakes, bowl games’ days are numbered
Bowl games, once considered rewards, are no longer worth the time for not only individual players but also full teams.

Excellent World Cup draw for the #USMNT. They just beat Australia and Paraguay in friendlies this fall, and they got one of the weaker UEFA playoff groups. Winning Group D is absolutely the target.

I believe the 2030 World Cup draw show is starting now so it can be done in time for that tournament

Washington Spirit owner Michele Kang notably sitting next to NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman at the World Cup draw...
NEW: The Spirit came up with a multi-million dollar offer to keep Trinity Rodman in the league, which she was ready to accept. It was vetoed by NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman, according to sources.

Where's it leave negotiations? Great question. www.nytimes.com/athletic/686...

Donald Trump is expected to feature heavily in tomorrow's World Cup draw. It actually won't be his 1st soccer draw.

Trump was a guest for the 1992 English League Cup QF draw, where he even gave the USWNT an unprompted shoutout.

The Breeze dominate the halftime scrimmage 6-0 over Philly. Lots of drops and overthrown passes by the Phoenix, who struggled with the longer dimensions of the NFL field.

Having the TBD teams in Pot 4 is a huge flaw that could easily be avoided if the playoffs took place before the draw like they used to. Instead, Pot 4 will have multiple teams that should really seeded higher. #USMNT experienced this in 2022 getting Wales from Pot 4.
FIFA has finalized World Cup draw pots and procedures. The news...

⚽ All playoff teams in Pot 4
🇦🇷🇪🇸 top seeds to opposite sides of the bracket
🇺🇸 USMNT now knows the order of its group opponents: Pot 3 first, Pot 2 second, Pot 4 third

The Spirit had their GM leave abruptly early in the season, had their manager leave abruptly midseason, and still finished 2nd despite Trinity Rodman missing much of the season and the playoffs. Tough ending but lots of positives for next year, even if Rodman leaves.

I'm sure there are reasons why it makes sense for the Commanders as a franchise to host an international game, but let's not pretend "a great fan opportunity" is one of them. DC fans will have 8 home games in 2026 while much of the NFC will have 9.

It's special, all but unheard of really, for a 5-star basketball recruit to be playing public school ball in Montgomery County instead of for one of the many elite private school teams in the DMV. Even more special to see him moving on to College Park.

Great drama and history across Concacaf tonight. But Honduras is out on a goals scored tiebreaker compared to a team that played completely different opponents.

That's a bad system, and we're going to see it again next summer with 3rd-place teams at the World Cup.
It's over!
