Cherry Hill NJ wants to restrict "sensitive" topics in its school libraries after one parent complained about an LGBTQ+ title. That uninformed over-reaction violates principles of librarianship, the NJ Freedom to Read Act, and students' 1st Amendment Rights. Hat trick! 🙄

The long-running ideological war on libraries, education, and government workers is not separate from AI boosterism. It is the same ideological war on human knowledge and expertise. In some cases AI is being used to directly supercharge this effort:

Republicans in toxic Texas have new legislation stripping school librarians of control over what books they purchase giving it to politicians instead. In the name of parental control any parent who doesn't like a book can get a book pulled from the shelves whether other parents want it or not.
Texas may change how schools select library books. Critics say it could lead to more bans.
Senate Bill 13 would create school library advisory councils largely made up of parents. It would give school boards, rather than librarians, the final say over new books.

Finally deleted my accounts on that other platform! Spent my entire professional career there, learning through the generosity of others, so it was a little hard to let go.
Anyone else hesitating?

If you ever doubt that students having access to a school library space matters:

Our MS Ss have to be escorted by Ts to the HS to browse physical books (long story).

I had 2 classes of kids come over today, and checked out more books in a period than I usually do in a week.

Access matters!!!
