Minnesotans have made clear: they don’t want mining in the Boundary Waters.

But instead of bolstering its protections, today House leadership is forcing a rushed vote to permanently strip the Boundary Waters of its federal protections and open it up to toxic copper sulfide mining.

Persistent chemicals like hexachloroethane don’t just disappear. They linger in soil and grass, build up in living tissue, and magnify up the food chain. In places where kids play, even low exposure can pose long-term health and environmental risks.
It is unclear whether the highly corrosive and carcinogenic hexachloroethane, or HC smoke, has been deployed in the immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota.

It was used during the 2020 protests in Portland, Ore., following the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd.
Federal agents are heavily deploying chemical irritants. What are the health consequences?
Munitions experts say ingredients can vary and can be considered proprietary.

Even if your Republican colleagues believe they are getting the worst of the worst, when the harm to the community so clearly outweighs any benefit and agencies refuse to pause or adjust, this stops being about public safety. They need to speak out.

In a briefing ICE claims a few arrests and blames local leaders and media, as if that justifies tear gas, fear, constitutional violations, and a city on edge. When harm wildly outweighs benefit and agencies refuse to pause or adjust, this isn’t public safety — it’s power, politics, and impunity.

This is important to us because what’s happening right now in Congress could permanently change protections for a beloved wilderness area. With everything else going on, this quietly moved forward while most people weren’t paying attention and it should concern all of us.

House Republicans passed a bill to roll back environmental protections for Minnesota’s Boundary Waters today.

We must continue to protect the BWCA for generations of Minnesotans to come – and this bill is not how we do that.
