Aurora borealis illuminating the night sky in candy colors with some stars twinkling in between. The left side is burgundy red with a bright green spot in the lower part and soft greens on the bottom. From the middle towards the right side you see pillars and rays illuminated in pink, purple and getting blue towards the right side. The sky has some soft shades of green and blue, making it appear turquoise in the upper right side, with bright green on the lower left bottom of the picture. In the foreground there are silhouettes of leafy trees & lights. One of the best events in my life was watching the natural phenomenon Aurora Borrealis in May 2024 that left me both mesmerized and mystified. I went out on a field to look for the dazzling dancing lights and eventually I was lying on said field in the dirt, looking up and watching the breathtakingly beautiful spectacle above me with tears in my eyes. The aurora was fluidly dancing over me in all shades of purple, pink, green, dark red, in round shapes and in pillars under some sparkling stars. Rare pink auroras are typically associated with a high solar activity. Red auroras occur only during strong electromagnetic storms. Auroras are caused by energized particles from the sun that are slamming into Earth's upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph / 72 million kmh. The magnetic field of the Earth then redirects the particles towards the north and south poles. The different colors are caused by the level of the solar activity, strength of the storm, density in the atmosphere, and the gases in the atmosphere that are excited by the incoming particles, eg oxygen and nitrogen, emit different colors. Also the altitude at which the aurora occurs plays a role, eg. oxygen emits green light, which is the most common color of the aurora, but it can also emit red light at higher altitudes. Nitrogen emits blue light, and can also produce purple and pink colors when mixed with oxygen. Truly amazing and fascinating!

Unfiltered beauty of the aurora borealis. The night sky with some stars visible, is illuminated in a bright pink nearly all over the photo. The left upper corner is dark, from there the pink is getting brighter till the mid of the photo, then it’s getting softer with blue hues and bright green on the bottom. In the foreground there are silhouettes of leafy trees visible, more prominent in the left lower corner, smaller on the left, beautifully mirroring the dark sky in the left upper corner. Some light pillars / rays are shining in the same direction.
