GENERAL ORV SPOILER WARNING
collective orv account of a few fans!! (there'll be a list here once i figure out how to do that)
lately ive been thinking about the latest singshong q&a with ize where they said that they wrote orv as readers rather than as writers... it forms a nice parallelism with kdj who begins the story uncertain of what kind of story he wants to tell yet.

thinking abt the concept of the story that doesnt exist unless it's read and the "only son" that became a "reader" when he read a story and how a human being in total isolation, with no connections, simply cannot exist

i often wonder about the question, what does writing mean to hsy? and what do stories mean to her? its interesting to compare her starting point to yjh in this regard i think. while yjh has no knowledge of and no interest in stories, hsy knows stories only too well and has become cynical about them

one way in which orv approaches the concept of salvation in a unique way is how strongly it emphasizes the role of the one who is saved, the reader. rather than regarding it as a passive role, the reader is the one who makes the story move, gives it life, finds meaning based on their unique pov

even after several years it feels like im constantly refining my understanding of orv... and most of the catalysts for growth have been motivated from discussing it with other people :) it makes me happy to think that people's relationships to stories can grow and change in this way

staring at the wall and thinking about how kdj couldnt bring himself to outright reject the ending of twsa because it was the result of the choices that yjh had made and he couldnt bring himself to reject hsy's ending of 1863 either because it was so close to the perfect story he had wished for.
August 16, 2025 at 11:58 PM
its just.. so much.. that yjh started his space journey with the intent of asking kdj how his story should end because kdj always seemed to know how everything ought to end. and then after reading orv and coming back he told hsy that kdj was a person who couldnt imagine a happy ending for himself

it drives me crazy that the question "can you love someone without understanding them" is such a core part of orv

kdj's trauma surrounding lsk selling their story is interesting because its so multifaceted
first, an abandonment by the one person who he believed he could rely on, for reasons he didnt understand, because he never really understood her as a person
second, losing control of his own narrative...

lately ive been thinking about the act structure of kdjs giant stories esp. sp's reveal (twist)
up to that point kdj'd been trying to push a message of "a story without sacrifice or anyone left behind" and sp appears because that isnt true. the perfect run was a lie built from sp's endless suffering
July 23, 2025 at 2:24 AM
thinking ab this again.. damn isnt it crazy that kdj lived for so long not being able to understand or be understood by anyone and yjh was the only human being in the world he felt like he understood. is it any surprise kdj got really weird about it
jdj's dynamic in early orv is very based around Loneliness. kdj is drawn to yjh is drawn to kdj because they are both extremely lonely. not only are they both people with a natural tendency to be withdrawn/isolate themselves, the circumstances of their lives have also isolated them even further

:o a friend of mine showed me some critique that common meta of female characters in orv focuses primarily on their relationships to men. i think this is quite a fair criticism. but i also think the origin of the problem is that orv itself does not give much spotlight to its female characters

orv uses the death of the author concept in such a beautiful way... its not about removing the author from the work, but about emphasizing the role of the reader in shaping the story, and then bringing it all home by tying it to the concept that "salvations are completed by the one receiving them"

imo kdjs defining trait is avoidance and understanding this is the key to understanding how he thinks. it's also a major component of his unreliable narration style

i'm really attached to the open ending of orv... sigh... what was really important to me, i think, was that the story seemed to require my input in order to continue, in a manner that required me to live through my life in full

ive always felt that getting to talk to other people about orv is something that has been invaluable in my understanding of the text. i dont mind it if other people disagree with me. in fact i think it's one of the best and fastest ways to develop my thinking, and it's a strong motivator too :p

ok now i wanna talk about kdj and conditional love. kdj calls himself an ordinary person. but does he actually think that he's ordinary? i would argue that he doesnt! after all, he felt so isolated from society, so sure that no one could understand him, that he turned into a squid about it. TWICE.
