I'm Siobhan, and I'm an illustrator (currently for fun but would also like it to be my main hustle) and this is where I just hang out and post whatever's on my mind

Not just games, either. While I'm not going to say High Guardian Spice was a good show, 99.9% of the criticism and vitriol directed at it had nothing to do with the show's (admittedly plentiful) actual flaws but rather because of who it was made by and for.
"Gay people should just create their own stuff" Webfishing dev got doxxed because their game was too gay, you guys literally don't let us have anything

What movie villain is a horrible person, but an absolute joy to watch onscreen?

Yknow I was gonna add Redwall to the discussion of Fantasy Stories Your Kids Should Be Reading Instead but (remembers redwall's weird "some races are just inherently predisposed to evil" thing) uh. Uhhhhhhh

My only answer as a creator is to try and take what I find beautiful, to take what has made stories like Lord of the Rings resonate with so many people, and to explore those ideas in a way that does not replicate the racism. But to identify the good, you *need* to identify the bad.

I think a lot about the old books that inspire me and what I do with them as a creator. I grew up with the western canon and that means that (as a white person especially) you get these poison pills; beautiful books that have a lot to say, that carry a societal, unacknowledged racism at their core.

It always makes me crazy when I see this book's place in fascist ideology, because I *want* to believe that they've fully missed the point (and tbh I am pretty sure Tolkien would object greatly to their interpretation - dude hated the Nazis); but what matters is the text, and that it is imperfect.

...but other people read it and think 'I'm Aragorn and everyone I don't like is an orc'. (it's besides the point, but inevitably these are the least Aragorn-like people you've ever heard of)

When I read LotR, I find a story about intentionally giving up power, about humble people having a greater impact on the world than any ruler, about the unaccountable cost of war...

We've seen this failure echo across fantasy ever since. Fantasy inspired by Lord of the Rings is rarely without distinct races, including an evil race that it's morally acceptable to mass-murder.

in letters Tolkien writes about the orcs as victims - "as pre-existing real beings on whom the Dark Lord has exerted the fullness of his power in remodelling and corrupting them" - but I think the books absolutely fail at portraying this, as a result of Tolkien's own racism.

I think about these matters a lot as a lover of Lord of the Rings...the racism in those books is their greatest flaw and, in my opinion, directly contradictory to the themes of hope over despair and humility over power.
