What have passwords got to do with cookies?

Opting for 'remember me' when logging into sites uses persistent session cookies that allow your behaviour to be tracked over a long time.

✅️ Use a password manager to log-in quickly each time.

Want something. Google it?

Your search history paints a rich picture for companies to target you with ads.

So what you use should provide privacy protections.

✅️ Use a privacy-friendly default search engine on your browser and device.

I've been reading three books as background to @openrightsgroup's #digitalsovereignty work. They have really helped focus my thinking on the topic. None are about the digital economy as such.

We all get cookie banner fatigue.

And that's the point – companies want you to hit 'accept all' and feed the Adtech beast.

So making it easier to reject cookies is key to protecting your privacy.

✅️ Add extensions to your browser.

What ads you see online is driven by cookies that track your activities on the Internet.

So which browser you use is an important choice when thinking about privacy.

✅️ That's why you should pick one that blocks ads and online trackers.

They flog us AI slop to 'revolutionise' government. We get locked-in to years of £billion contracts with Mandelson's prints all over them.

Adtech companies flaunt cookie rules because the regulator doesn't enforce them.

So why might the ICO weaken them further?

It'd make it even easier for advertisers to target people based on mental health, addictions or other vulnerabilities.

What about cookie consent banners?

Under UK law, you need to consent to companies tracking you. But the data regulator has been too lenient in how this is done.

That means we get hit with confusing or manipulative cookie banners.

So most people end up being tracked whether they want to be or not.

How does it work?

Our cookie crumbs left across the Internet form predictive profiles.

These are shared and sold in a real-time bidding system that runs automatically when you visit a website.

The ad space is auctioned based on the interests gleaned by tracking you online. Highest bidder wins.

How does a click turn into a digital stalker?

It's the work of the Adtech industry that feasts on our cookies to sell ads.

This system automatically shares our data profiles with companies thousands of times a second across millions of sites.

The UK is overexposed in its dependency on foreign tech to keep government, public services and democratic processes running.

There are moves across Europe to assert #DigitalSovereignty – Germany, France and the European Commission are all looking at developing strategies.

The time to act is now!
January 23, 2026 at 1:12 PM
What does a #DigitalSovereignty strategy look like?

⚫ Open Source software to ensure continuity. We can switch suppliers whilst maintaining critical services, because we aren't locked into a closed proprietary system.

⚫ Interoperable systems to strengthen competition and the resilience of UK tech.
January 23, 2026 at 1:12 PM
UK national security is exposed in having vital systems supplied by a handful of foreign tech companies.

We're vulnerable to risks, such as service withdrawal, sanctions, commercial failure, geopolitical disruption and unilateral changes to service terms.

The government lacks effective control.
