It also seems like there is a big opportunity for some country, somewhere (that isn't already sick of foreign students) to expand their English-language degree offerings and attract not just the academics, but the students.

It will probably kill me to take control of my 10 million photos, zillion emails, shared calendar, hundreds of docs, etc etc but I'm going to try to quit Google.
WHY IS GOOGLE DOING THIS?

I mean, yeah, they want to keep government contracts (which may now be an outsized part of the business).

But conceding to an autocrat is EXPENSIVE. The only cost-effective thing to do is fight back at the first chance you've got. Every concession just increases the cost.
Is Google Calendar part of the government?

Will Google lose contracts if Holocaust Remembrance Day is on the calendar?

Google Maps changes are odious but maps require standardization. There's no excuse for this.

Thanks for another great reason to exit Google products!

I gave a lecture today and included this picture on a slide, so that is my one nod to cultural relevance. Back to 90s-kid jokes no one gets for the rest of the semester.

I just received the reader's reports for my book and they are *so* helpful. Our profession relies on a lot of behind-the-scenes, anonymous labor and I am filled with deep gratitude for the many people who took time to engage with my work in the past several months.

Talking a little about empathy in Historical Methods today, and bringing in this quote, used as an epigraph in Hilary Mantel's The Mirror and the Light. It gets me every time.
