By using the notwithstanding clause pre-emptively - which, again, they *can* but *need not* do - the UCP is not simply admitting that their laws are breaching Charter rights and bypassing the courts.

They are further admitting that their laws cannot be justified in a free and democratic society.

@mark-carney.bsky.social are you ever going to stand up for Canadians? Your book and your claim of 'values' was hogwash.

Just heard someone on CBC quote someone saying this budget 'choked the woke weeds' out of Lib policy. So the LPC & Carney have no conscience & don't care about Canadians. Carney is still better than PP but barely 😡

Let’s this sink in. Bill 2 overrides:

• The Labour Relations Code;
• The Public Education Collective Bargaining Act;
• The Alberta Bill of Rights;
• The Alberta Human Rights Act;
• The Education Act.

All without vigorous debate or consultation with Albertans.

Braid: An appalling, unjust law drives Alberta teachers back to work
Alberta teachers are going back to work, but the law that drives them lingers as a dangerous attack on rights, writes columnist Don Braid.

“Let’s just list some. A Westminster system of government. A Crown. Single-payer public health-care system, a managerial state and Aboriginal rights, you have to get rid of all of these things. And of all those things, perhaps the elephant in the room is Aboriginal rights.” 😡

Yup. That’s how bad things have become here because of the UCP government. #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli

Amnesty International Canada condemns Alberta government’s use of notwithstanding clause in Bill 2
Alberta's use of the notwithstanding clause in Bill 2 means that courts won’t be able to strike down the law even if it violates the Charter.

I listened to the audiobook version of The History of an Elephant by Alex Lasker. Brilliantly read, a touching tender story.

An important note…

Smith isn’t just overriding the federal Charter…

She’s also overriding the Alberta Human Rights Act AND the Alberta Bill of Rights she just rewrote.

Far too many Canadians think the federal government controls everything. All while ignoring the decades-long sabotage of 🇨🇦 by powerful provincial gov’ts that control healthcare, education, minimum wage, rent controls, infrastructure & so many other aspects of gov’t that impact daily life. #cdnpoli

Watching Global News and I'm furious that they interviewed the Fraser Institute and referred to our Health Care System as the 'public' system; its the Canadian system!

I want to express 1 hope & 1 fear

I hope when the pendulum swings back to democracy & caring for each other, RW ideology is turned to dust

I fear that if @mark-carney.bsky.social doesn't speak out against the AB throne speech, specifically private HC, that we will be seeing this nationally
October 23, 2025 at 9:59 PM
I feel hopeless.
Listening to the throne speech. We are fucked. Privatized healthcare. Oil. Oil. Privatized healthcare. Private police. Private. Private. Private. Public money going to make their cronies richer. 😭

Guess it's time to start downsizing and looking at real estate out of the province. #abpoli

I've been seeing posts about how impossible it is to book Covid shots and had hoped if I waited a few days, it would get better but I just tried and got hung up on and found there are ZERO appointments available. Like, ever? Anyone figure this out? #Covid #Abpoli

Just watched the latest episode of #BrilliantMinds The prayer circle, lies from head nurse, 'God' references & lack of challenge to the cruel, superstitious mother were really gross. I suspect this is pandering to the current US admin but I hope this is a one off from a show I usually enjoy.

Don't forget, workers get paid a lump sum for their time regardless of how long after 8 the line of voters finishes or how long the count takes
I think the first sentence in this article is poorly written; my polling station closed precisely at 8.00 pm.

There were many issues with the process, granted, but I don't blame the lack of tabulators.

The computers were slow, some workers just didn't show. We all worked very hard
