It's hard to find words to fully describe the level of disgust and despise we all feel right now, but it's safe to say that it's been brewing for a long time. I don't think he and his administration realise the beast he's unleashed in Europe right now. He's underestimating the resistance he'll face

It's a Danish program, so probably not available anywhere else tbh 😬 It's called Radio Tour. But the podcast I linked is the complete program in podcast form, so all the interviews are there, and all in English except for Jonas 😊

He genereally believes, he can reach the same level with less time away, because the mental aspect is also an important part of performance, and one he believes there needs to be a bigger focus on.

So he understand the loss of motivation. Respects that he decided to quit, although they'll miss him on the team of course.

Jonas experienced to be close to burnout after becoming a GC rider and especially in 2023 where he had 180 days away from his family, which was too much ‡️
January 17, 2026 at 3:20 PM
Wants to do the Giro now before his career is over, in modern cycling, he doesn't think he has 5-10 years left in his career, so he wants to do it now in his peak years.

He understands Simon, understands the pressure, he has been close to burnout too. He knows how hard Simons last year was.‡️
January 17, 2026 at 3:20 PM
Based on data, early part of the Vuelta 25 (pre illness) was some of the best numbers he has achieved since the crash, so a GT beforehand doesn't seem to hurt his power. And with the giro he'll also be able to do altitude beforehand ‡️
January 17, 2026 at 3:20 PM
"Worst kept secret in cycling that I wanted to do the giro" πŸ˜‚.

They were picking 2 races between Catalunya, Paris-Nice and UAE tour to get the optimal prep, Catalunya was certain bc it's the ideal giro prep, and UAE tour chosen over P-N bc it's an optimal period between the races for training ‡️
January 17, 2026 at 3:20 PM
Oh okay, so interviews with everyone but Jonas is in English. For Jonas this is a summary ish of what he said:

He wanted to do the Giro for two years and in general to change up his schedule, especially last year. The team didn't allow/agree to it before now. He is more motivated than ever before‡️

For anyone interested, HBO max has a bunch of great interviews with Anders Mielke from the Visma media day with Jonas, Matheo, Campy, Heijboer and Grischa πŸ™‚ Likely georestricted, BUT there is also a podcast version πŸ™Œ Both linked ‡️

Yeah his "I'll never want to be GC leader again" quote comes to mind πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«πŸ˜… But also his domestique role doesn't involve hitting the brakes and rolling in with the gruppetto once his work is done. That has got to add fatique compared to his flat road domestique colleagues, physically and mentally 😊

"Go on with it, no one will notice" πŸ™ƒ Well, I hope you win it haha

Hilarious that they went through with it anyways, but why not, I guess πŸ˜‚
January 16, 2026 at 6:04 PM
Since 2019 only Kuss has done and finished 3 GT's. If it's so easy and unproblematic to do, then why aren't teams doing it? Hardly a coinsidence, if you ask me. And so, definitely not a hot take to think that it can come with a price

Have a good evening πŸ™‚

How many riders start in all grand tours?
There are 107 riders in history that have started in the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and La Vuelta a EspaΓ±a in one season. The last riders to have done that are Luis LeΓ³n SΓ‘nchez (2023), Sepp Kuss...

I've said my reasoning. I'll only add that, so in that case, teams are all in the wrong when they're reluctant to do 3 GT's - like UAE when they said they don't want to risk that for Pogacar fx for the sake of his future career. Sometimes teams have these principles for a reason.
January 16, 2026 at 6:01 PM
I don't think it's controversial at all, so consider overexertion and long term effects from this in his case. The same way Jonas has said the 24 tour has cost him a year of improvements in level, not bc of the crash directly, but bc of overexertion on racing straight after. But WHO KNOWS
January 16, 2026 at 2:55 PM
Could be πŸ™‚ But in my view, he's had 2 years ever since the Vuelta 23 on a subpar level, and it took him 2 years to emerge at the Vuelta 25 looking a bit like his former self. So the way I see it, I don't see much point in blaming either age, nor a 2 month bout of covid for those 2 years of decline πŸ™‚
January 16, 2026 at 2:53 PM
Yeah, the body clears the infection quickly. It's no different than other similar "cold" viruses where a tiny fraction will have longer lasting symptoms πŸ™‚ Very often due to accessory breathing muscle inflammation and imbalance, which with the right treatment is an easy fix, though can take weeks πŸ™‚
January 16, 2026 at 1:02 PM
Sure it took time, but he himself said before la Vuelta 24 that he had fully recovered πŸ™‚ And he wasn't at his 23 level before Covid, neither after he recovered from Covid. Imo, we first saw glimpses of his previous level in the final week of the 25 Vuelta πŸ™‚ Could be bc of the triple imo. Who knows.

Apparently already forgotten 😭😱
January 16, 2026 at 6:50 AM
Unfortunately he doesn't have that excuse πŸ˜‰
January 16, 2026 at 6:49 AM
Of course 3 GT's didn't lead to his covid infection? 😊 I mean it might very well have led to him never really having reached his own high level again - maybe before Vuelta 25 at least. But again, only he knows.
January 15, 2026 at 11:04 PM
He said already before the vuelta 24 that he had recovered fully from his covid infection. But IMO it has taken him until the final part of la vuelta 25 to get near his previous level. I don't think it's unfair to speculate if overexertion plays a part in that. In the end only he knows.

@teamvismaleaseabike.com hire me πŸ«‘πŸ˜† I didn't just call Sepp stupid btw..
January 15, 2026 at 2:28 PM
I am actually πŸ˜‚πŸ«£ I've seen a fair few ultra runners and other extreme sport athletes who had massive goals and never really recovered from that exertion - that is never reached their previous level and some had to quit. There are definitely long term risks involved in pushing (past?) the limits πŸ˜…
