when people are assessing “why a game failed” we’re already examining the failure through a capitalist lens. and that sucks for sure.
i only mean to say that we can zoom in further to assess how to survive the industry. im speculating here but it seems like 2XKO was hemorrhaging money hard.

in fairness I do think 2XKO had some immediate content problems that harmed it specifically. obviously we don’t have solid numbers but other fighting games are succeeding
it seems like a combo of lack of character variety and exceedingly unrealistic expectations by riot wounded it substantially

i think “near identical copies” is a bit of a fucking stretch. i wouldn’t call a multi second latency blurry slow empty landscape with no intention or goals a “near identical copy” of mario 64
this language isn’t imprecise so much as it’s completely misleading.

2XKO is a good fucking game. it feels good in the hands. it has gorgeous art and deep moment to moment gameplay. it’s development was a triumph
it could’ve been a meaningful investment for riot, but instead they’re choosing to rely on their two explosive hits.
