This was Toyota's big sedan. 0-60 in 16 seconds? No wonder so many people smoked. On the freeway ramp, you'd have time to unwrap a cigarette pack, take out a fag, tap the end, light it, and get it drawing good before you'd have to pay attention to merging.

When you think about how soft drinks were often served at first, at a specialty location by a soda jerk, the insane amount of sugar, 30-60g currently, makes sense with it being a once a week treat. The drinking multiple soft drinks a day is where things went off the rails.
