Today is too late for the launch, but the nice thing about books is that they're available afterwards. Buy this one!
Hold the date: Book launch on February 6th!

‘Fragments of Victory: The Contemporary Irish Left’, which I co-edited this with David Landy, is forthcoming from Pluto Press in January 2025 and is available to pre-order now.

Very interesting thread. 🧵
Thinking about historical parallels. People talk about coups and autogolpes, the fascist seizure of power in the 1930s, and there are resemblances. But there are other models we could think about.

The irony of the neoliberal dispensation in a academia is the refusal to apply something like a cost-benefit analysis to competition itself
Researchers spend approximately 45% of their time on administrative activities related to #grants rather than actual #research. The current #competition in research #funding has significant drawbacks; evidence-based improvements of the funding system are required: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

I think this thread is wrong in a number of ways, but it's still an interesting idea.
Once upon a time, the idea that academia might destroy capitalism did not seem so absurd.

In Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy (1942), Joseph Schumpeter argued that the expansion of higher education would lead to the emergence of an underemployed academic precariat. 1/16

This is so sad. Henri was one of the most incredible men I've ever met, and it was an honour to know him and consider him a comrade.
Henri Simon has died today. A militant marxist and proponent of council communism, Henri was a founding member of Socialisme ou Barbarie. He was also a good friend and a comrade with an unsurpassed history of experience and struggles. Goodbye friend ✊

A good article by Anne Marie Walsh in the @irishindependent.bsky.social about my report on pension auto-enrolment, gender and care launched today with the National Women's Council @nwc.bsky.social
New auto-enrolment pension scheme could make gender gap even worse, report warns
A new pension scheme for 750,000 workers could make a 35pc gap between men and women’s retirement incomes even worse, a report has warned.

Ireland’s auto-enrolment pension scheme may deepen the gender pension gap, as it links pensions to earnings—disadvantaging women for unpaid care work.

The auto-enrolment scheme is not gender neutral. It risks increasing the gender pension gap and that cannot be ignored by policy makers. We need to focus on meaningful, non harmful reforms of our pension system. Mary Murphy, Age Action #PensionJustice #Stillstuckinthegap

Private tax relief is the elephant in the room because it benefits those most who have the highest incomes. We want to see adequate pensions for people in old age and the best way to achieve this is the State pension. Senator Alice Mary Higgins #PensionJustice

The upcoming pension auto-enrolment scheme will not address the structural inequalities faced by women in the pension system and may even make them worse, according to a new report.

Just after leaving the launch of a report I wrote for the National Women's Council about pension auto-enrolment.
Pension auto-enrolment won’t tackle inequality in our pension system for women. This is one of the key findings of our new report ‘Still stuck in the Gap’ which we are launching today! #PensionJustice
