So I have finished A Journey to Love.
The last episodes gave me lots to of joy, still - despite where things were very obviously going.

attempted to explain my unified theory of #Cdrama 👇
Screencap of a cascaded Bluesky reply thread in which I said: there's also a... procedural gameplay element to many chinese dramas, especially historicals and modern thrillers, that to me make them feel unique. They routinely serve you the plot equivalent of engineering ways out of a series of escape rooms, leveling up the stakes/opponents like a shounen anime Yanxi Palace and Nirvana in Fire are to me the exemplars of this but you see it everywhere. Some K-dramas also do this, but to me in a K-drama the romance and character tropes are always foregrounded, where in a C-drama the emphasis is always on allowing brilliant characters to triumph, often in a way that educates us about X aspect of Chinese community and history, while that thing then becomes the basis for yet more PLOT INTRIGUE. Yanxi Palace does this over and over again with various intangible heritage crafts! Pearl Girl does it with pearls! Glory with tea! War of Faith w/STOCKS lol i could go on and on but to me this is THE thing i keep coming back to Chinese dramas for: the way they build characters and perpetually maintain tension through these intricate elaborate ensemble plots where you don't know who the mastermind is for 55 episodes or 3 seasons (cough Joy of Life) etc.
