Clerics pt.1
Dragon Issue #283
Artist Dennis Cramer

"Dennis's work should be immediately recognized by D&D fans. While being one of the friendliest (if not outright peculiar) people I know, he is also one of the most talented brush and ink artists to ever grace these pages...."

Drow pt 2
Dragon Issue #267
Artist David Day

I don't think a lot of these read as "Drow" exactly given that the stereotypical black skin and white hair seems to be mostly absent from these portraits. Still, a lot of character in these. All of them work for various flavors of disgruntled elf.

Drow
Dragon Issue #267
Artist David Day

"This assignment on the drow has been a learning experience for me," claims David Day. "Of course, I had heard of Drizzt, the dark elf, but that was about as far as it went..."

Unlikely PCs pt.2
Dragon Issue #274
Artists Todd Lockwood, Sam Wood

This whole gallery feels very quintessential 3E, which makes sense given Todd and Sam were staff artists at WotC and worked on the initial art design for 3rd edition. Todd's work in particular is all over early 3E WotC Releases.

Unlikely PCs pt.1

Artists Todd Lockwood, Sam Wood

"Third Edition D&D is all about breaking old molds, so we attempted to come up with combinations of character races and classes that wouldn’t have been possible or likely before..."

Swashbucklers pt.2
Dragon Issue #273
Artist Ted Beargeon

The swashbuckler gallery has some really great portraits. I don't know that they all read as "swashbuckler" but it doesn't really matter. A lot of the portrait articles/galleries have titles that only line up with a handful of their pieces.

Swashbucklers pt.1
Dragon Issue #273
Artist Ted Beargeon

"The swashbuckler does not accept life as it is but wills it to be as it could or should be," writes Ted Beargeon. "The swashbuckling hero is not a whimpering victim prone to fits of self-pity."

Dark Heroes pt.2
Dragon Issue #276
Artist Gregory L. Baker

Artist Notes Continued:

“...They live hard and must always be ready to defend what is theirs. Perhaps this is why they take friendships so seriously. These dark heroes live by their principles, and are certainly willing to die for them.”
