Ontario’s universities have the lowest per-student funding of any province in Canada. The provincial government can address this embarrassing gap by funding our universities at $11.75 for the next 5 years.

This Advocacy Day, OCUFA continues to share critical issues facing our sector. Despite the government’s 2019 decision to cap and freeze domestic tuition, Ontario domestic undergraduates still pay rates of tuition well above the Canadian average with higher levels of debt.

Ontario’s economy is under threat from American tariffs and automation-induced job losses. Despite all university programs providing skills that employers need, only a narrow range of programs are receiving additional financial support from government.

Our universities are in crisis—underfunded, undervalued, and pushed to the breaking point. The ongoing austerity measures are stifling research productivity and innovation, causing direct and indirect job losses, and downgrading Ontario’s competitiveness and reputation.
