Ueana dismissed her weapons, and looked up at the dragon. “Please, where is your rider? Let us help if we can.” She had no idea if it even understood what she was trying to say, but at the very least it wasn’t trying to attack them.

“Most women like dick, Pat.” Willow glowered, head to the side. “They do, don’t they?” Pat smiled sweetly. “So, imagine what it does to you when you start to go to bed early every night? At first, you’d tell yourself that you’re just tired. It has nothing to do with that dream. You like men. You like their muscles. The angles of their bones. Their strength. You feel protected and secure. Even a little bit afraid of them. But you still can’t get her out of your head. When she appears a second time, your heart flips. You’ve soaked the sheets before her venom has even touched your neck. You know you’re not supposed to want this. But that night, you come so hard you can’t deny it any longer. You’re ready to run away with her the next time she returns. But she never does. You sink into a deep depression. You ignore your children. You stop eating. Your husband takes you to doctor after doctor. Eventually, you find one that you think might understand. You confess everything. They tell your husband. But they change one detail. Because women don’t do that. Women don’t want that. The existence of monsters is more believable to them than women who want to fuck other women.” Pat took another slice of pizza.

Sophie brough her face closer to Veronica's. Veronica searched her eyes. Sophie brushed her lips against Veronica's, then moved to press her mouth to hers. But Veronica looked down. "I'm… I'm not ready," she whispered. "I've never…" "You've never kissed anyone?" "No," Veronica mumbled. "No, I have, but… But it never works out." "It's easy. Just try!" Sophie said. "Try!" Veronica lifted her chin and let Sophie press her mouth to hers. She shook with emotion and her feelings threatened to overwhelm her. She always drove people away, but felt so hopeless and drowning in loneliness that she was willing to cling to any life preserver. When Sophie went to pull back, Veronica put her arms around her and pulled her closer. She was afraid to let go for fear of breaking the spell. They kissed again. And again.

The two looked out over the canals, watching the lanterns float gently into the night sky, first one and then two, and then dozens rising above the city and disappearing into pinpricks of light. Caz’s finger snaked over Nia’s. She smiled. “Hey.” “Hey,” Nia echoed. Her heart pounded in her chest. Below them, the doll appeared in the staircase. Nia flinched. “What are you doing?” the doll demanded. “Having a private conversation,” Caz groaned, snatching her hand away. “I see that,” the doll said. “Why here? It’s low tide. Can’t you smell that?” Matteo’s head appeared at the door. “I can,” he said, wrinkling his nose. Nia sighed.
