I don't know who needs to hear this today, but our lab's new website comes equipped with a "Carc Gallery" (a collection of photos of salmon carcasses that died of natural causes, after spawning).

Not a new sketch but new to #sundayfishsketch. Design idea for a future linocut print “Salmon death cycle”

Why am I so excited about COMPASS Pathfinders Program?

It's based on Wilburforce Fellowship in Conservation Science. I was in 2015 cohort. It was extraordinary -- I still benefit from the targeted training, generous network, & powerful collaboration.

Apply!

For reasons that don’t need elaboration, things have been unusually busy so if you’ve followed me recently and you’re a fisheries/climate impacts/aquatic biodiversity/etc acct and I haven’t followed back yet, thanks for your patience!

Introducing my first substack, Rising Rivers, where I explore the science and culture behind rivers and fisheries intended for non-academic audience. First article is "Abundant Rivers" with the thoughts on the role (and risks) of salmon hatcheries open.substack.com/pub/sethwhit...
Abundant Rivers
What role can hatcheries play in recovering harvestable salmon abundance while protecting wild populations?

Listening to this now!

"Much of the world is hidden from us, that we don't perceive it and we don't understand it. And that it is worth understanding and it is necessary to understand."
The most achingly beautiful explanation of what science is, from @edyong209.bsky.social: “the idea that much of the world is hidden from us, that we don’t perceive it and don’t understand it, and that it is worth understanding and it is necessary to understand.”

I was always hoping there was a way to find the salmonid scientists on here easily. Now there is! Please comment to be added, it is (very) incomplete 🙏

I'm forever a fan of getting a nature fix, but I reject for the sole purpose of being more productive

"The boost to cognition lasted 30 minutes after leaving the natural setting, which may help you plan the best time for mentally demanding work."

Thanks, but I'll keep that 30 min for myself
The nature cure: how time outdoors transforms our memory, imagination and logic. Without engaging with natural environments, our brains cease to work well. Exposure to nature isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity.

When baby salmon emerge from the gravel, how far do they disperse to summer rearing grounds? We haven't known until now (at least at the population scale), because they're too small to tag. In a paper just out, we answered this question using parentage-based (genetic) tagging! tinyurl.com/39b2sfjd
Watershed-scale dispersal patterns of juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) revealed through genetic parentage analysis - Movement Ecology
Background For many aquatic taxa, juvenile dispersal from spawning locations to rearing habitats is a critical process influencing individual fitness and population dynamics. However, our understandin...

The surge of activity on here has been incredible! I recall it taking ages to build the first 1K followers on the bird site

Same same.
I really missed the fish/freshwater/conservation science community I had developed at Twitter. I’m so happy to have been able to re-establish it here, almost instantly.

My academic doppelgänger has joined Bluesky!
Giving Bluesky a chance for connecting with other freshwater/fish folk. I’ve studied how artificial light at night affects river & riparian ecosystems, but these days do advocacy and focus on how fish respond to restoration, dams & angling.

Hi new and old followers! Looking for examples using stream-side and instream incubators (“hatchboxes”) for releasing unfed salmonid fry to enhance harvest, supplement natural runs, or restore extirpated populations. Any leads appreciated, please repost to spread the word!
