Recovering journalist. I was born in the 1950s, so why do I have to live through the 1930s again? Sic semper tyrannis.

NEW: A Jan. 6 defendant who threw an explosive into a Capitol tunnel packed with cops — freed this week by President Trump — has been re-arrested on a felony gun charge that has been pending since 2023.

In a normal world, ending birthright citizenship—a right guaranteed by the 14th Amendment since 1868—would be something a president just couldn’t get away with. But Trump, who appointed three justices to the Supreme Court, very much owns the high court, and…

Donald Trump Takes a Sharpie to Democracy
By issuing a blitz of executive orders, including ones ending birthright citizenship and pardoning January 6 rioters, the 47th president is already undermining the rule of law.

Donald Trump’s first day back in office culminated in a sea of executive orders—a zone once again flooded with shit. Some of those orders were ceremonial (“promoting beautiful federal civic architecture”); others were PR stunts more fitting for his reality show

A dangerous and likely Trump maneuver as noted by the ever incisive Sargent.

Use of a bizarrely flexible definition of "invasion" is positively Orwellian. Book it that if not brought to heel via the courts+ballot box (and soon), use of such an authoritarian move won't be limited to the border.
Awful: Buried in one of Trump's executive orders is a measure that appears to declare that his power to nullify asylum entirely exists wholly independent of Congress or any legal statute. That could pave the way for major abuses, legal experts tell me:

Trump’s Awful New “Invasion” Executive Order is One of His Darkest Yet
One EO appears to give Trump extraordinary powers as long as we’re facing “invasion.” Who gets to decide when the “invasion” is over? Take one guess.

What I saw at the kleptocrats' revolution:

While Trump's MAGA marks were getting soaked in a weekend of cancelled events and a $250M grift, the rise of American oligarchy was toasted on yachts by crypto dude bros and a president with a meme coin

My column from DC www.inquirer.com/opinion/trum...

In D.C. for the launch of Trump 47, the MAGA faithful got soaked as a once and future POTUS cashes in.

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance.

Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.
Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"
