3D Analysis SIG board elections The members of the 3D Analysis SIG (Special Interest Group) Board are elected for a minimum term of 3 years with the right to be re-elected for a second term. All Board positions will be open to interested eligible candidates. 1. General Information about the Board of CAA-GR The 3D Analysis SIG provides a platform for bringing together researchers and practitioners to address the methodological, technical, and theoretical challenges of working with 3D data, from acquisition to analysis and dissemination. A founding goal of the group is to explore and advance the scope of 3D Analysis within archaeology. The task of the Board is to meet regularly for the purposes of the SIG. The Board has the right to opt for electronic voting whenever this is deemed appropriate. 2. Call for Candidacies The current interim board is launching the election procedure for new Board members. All eligible candidates are invited to apply for a Board position. The election of the Board shall take place at the General Meeting (GM) of the SIG during the CAA2026 in Vienna by show of hands. Submission of candidacy: Candidates should notify the current members of the 3D SIG Board for their willingness to stand for election by sending an email to the SIG’s email address (3d.analysis@caa-international.org) by Monday, February 16th 2026. In their email, the candidates should include a letter of intent (max. 1 page) and a short CV (max. 1 page) with webpage address and ORCHID-ID. All information on candidates will be made accessible via the CAA-International and/or national channels. 3. Students from the Ritsumeikan Archaeology Research Group put together a wonderful temporary exhibit at the Kyoto City Archaeological Museum on mountain temples around Kyoto (京の山寺). One of the students made a really impressive video using a few scans I helped with :) #archaeology #Japan #Kyoto #3D

Got an email about the autorenewal for my Sketchfab Pro account & decided to cancel the subscription. This will result in a lot of dead links to models that exceeded the free plan size limits, but it serves as a good incentive to push forward with some more sustainable alternatives #3D #archaeology🏺

Science isn't something you can just restart by a snap of the fingers either. The amount of lost knowledge and lab-specific know how lost is immeasurable. Like poisoning the soil in a forest of 300 yo trees. You can't just replant and hope things are like before.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.

The recent 7.6 offshore earthquake near Aomori has impacted the Jōmon World Heritage Sites in the region. I found an article online discussing damage to artifacts from the Futatsunomori Shell Midden (north of Hachinohe). Local staff are working with university partners to respond to the damage.
A collection of reassembled Jomon pottery lies in pieces on the ground of a storage space, while an individual picks through the debris.

Travelers visiting the United States from countries like Britain, France, Germany and South Korea could soon have to undergo a review of up to five years of their social media history, according to a proposal filed on Tuesday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The change would affect visitors eligible for the visa waiver program, which allows people from 42 countries to travel to the United States for up to 90 days without a visa as long as they first obtain electronic travel authorization. In a document filed on Tuesday in the Federal Register, C.B.P. said it plans to ask applicants for a long list of personal data including social media, email addresses from the last decade, and the names, birth dates, places of residence and birthplaces of parents, spouses, siblings and children. Under the current system, applicants from visa waiver countries must enroll in the Electronic System for Travel Authorization program. They pay $40 and submit an email address, home address, phone number and emergency contact information. The authorization is good for two years.
