Now in 2026, after Lawrence Station reopened for regular bus service and as Eglinton construction wraps up, there is little need to keep Roe Loop operational anymore. Residents have long requested additional park space to beautify the area. And thus goes one of the last remnants of the trolleys.

In 2009, a study by the City recommended closing Roe Loop and turning it into a park. However, the TTC insisted on retaining the loop for contingencies. This became useful in 2019, when the 11 Bayview, 124 Sunnybook and 162 Bridle Path had to be diverted due to construction at Lawrence Station.

When the trolleys were disposed of in 1992, the 61 was extended to the 401 like we know today. However, service still short turned at Roe Loop at rush hours. In 2004, all service ran to the 401 and regular revenue service of Roe Loop was finally discontinued... or was it?

Roe Loop was a transfer point between the 1 Armour Heights and 61 Avenue Rd N. 61 was operated by trolley buses. However, the wires only went as far north as Roe and customers had to transfer to route 1 diesels to continue north. The 1 used unusually small 30ft buses due to low ridership.

Less interesting details from tomorrow's TTC board agenda:

Roe Loop will officially be declared surplus and handed over to the City of Toronto for conversion in to a park. This marks the closure of the last remnant of a bizzare operation dating from the trolley days.

No, it's policy. The same restrictions are in place at Queen and Dufferin and Gerrard and Carlaw.

missed another light cycle westbound at Atlantic because of the restricted speed policy under underpasses. This outdated policy was due to trolley poles losing contract with the overhead during elevation changes. We don't have trolley poles on tbe network anymore!!

missed another light cycle westbound at Shaw because the electric switches are still malfunctioning despite the equipment here haven last been totally replaced just a few years ago

this isn't shit that TSP alone can fix!!! Our dated infrastructure and nonsensical procedures are some of the biggest hindrances to efficient service.

there should be ZERO reason two streetcars can't be crossing the same intersection at the same time in our holy year of 2026
February 2, 2026 at 2:40 AM
Three westbound cars at spadina which just missed an entire light cycle because of one eastbound car crossing the intersection so now there's four westbound cars stacked up here

truly peak

The remaining Line 5 route change notices are starting to go up

Line 4 works this weekend means the rare Line 4 Shuttle is running. A relatively calm operation vs the usual Line 1/2 shuttles.

It's really crazy travelling Europe and realising how much more advanced the signal and track infra is on their streetcars vs ours. No, Boston and SF are not good examples of streetcar infra.

I'm glad someone is finally able to delegate to our officials what Europe has had for decades.
good presentation coming to the TTC board next week on transit signal priority, with reference to systems used in amsterdam.

much needed as our transpo officials are seemingly unaware of how much more functional TSP works in other jurisdictions, while maintaining toronto's very weak implementation

Ive tried to approach this from my experience as a transit stop planner and observations on street.

As for Queen/Shaw, transfers can be made at Queen/Ossington. This is a better transfer location anyways as the EB car stop at Queen/Shaw is not very safe (two lanes of traffic must be crossed) and the NB stop at Shaw/Queen requires buses to turn from a NS curb lane stop.
January 27, 2026 at 6:10 PM
I removed King/Shaw since it's a common pinch point for buses/streetcars when multiple vehicles arrive at the same time and the intersection often gets blocked. Transfers can still be made at King/Atlantic or King/Sudbury for 63 NB and King/Strachan for 63 SB
